Racing in Space

Post by Battlehymn Republic »

I'm trying to come up with all of the possible ideas for futuristic racing in one-man spacecraft, actually both in space and on planets:

1. Racing through a manmade debris field (compares skill, maneuverability)

2. Racing near a zone with strong graviational effects (near planets' fields?)

3. F-Zero/Wipeout styled racing (hovering over a track)

Are there any other possible ways to race with spacecraft?

Drag racing, AKA see who can build the biggest, highest specific impulse propulsion system and try to achieve a significant fraction of c.

Scrapheap extreme (Junkyard wars to you from the USA). Two teams in space suits and a single orbital rubbish dump.

Tasks for episodes.

Sun diving- who can build a ship to dive nearest the sun and return.

And I can’t really think of much else other than races with use X source of power.

Racing with a solar sail and nothing but a space suit ( one with good instruments of course ).

Perhaps some extreme versions of the races which test AI skills: e.g., racing through a thick debris field on a mouse-sized spaceship.
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

If you plan to have lots of kickass dodging maneuvers, make your craft small, and please, put it in some sort of atmosphere.

Glider races in Saturn's atmosphere ? Do it from one floating platform to another, perhaps around floating obstacles. For real fun, sharpen the wings and let the racers try to cut each other down.

Solar-flare surfing. Bar none, that's the best extreme sport for the new millennium.
What is Project Zohar?

Here's to a certain mostly harmless nutcase.

^Except that in space, you can hardly maneuver around asteroids that quickly or easily. Any asteroid-racing ship needs to be small and durable with lots of high-power fuel.

I do like the solar flare surfing idea though. Something else to consider would be races on tiny moons like Phoebos or Demos. Imagine the speed a normal person could attain.
