A word on Clone battalions

Post by Vympel »

I just noticed these from the AotC novel:
p 206 wrote:Sifo-Dyas explained to us the Jedi aversion to leading droids. He told us Jedi could only command an army of life forms.
and finally:
p 230 wrote:"Prime Minister Lama Su has informed me that the first battalion of clone troopers are ready for delivery."
Should we say then that the "battalions" referred to in Episode III are armies of 200,000 clones?

In most normal armies "battalion" is on the order of thousands/hundreds of men, but definetely not something like 200,000. Of course, the Republic army differs greatly in scale, but from what I gathered lower units like platoon correspond to ones realistically used in Earth armies...? What's the meaning of "battalion"? Palpatine and Jerjerrod in RotJ chat about "a few battalions" on Endor, that would correspond with what is known about the numbers of Imperials on Endor, a few thousand, not a few hundred thousand.

Didn't Yoda bring a battalion to Kashyyyk. I only saw one Venator at the battle, which would be the battalions mode of transportation. Yoda may have brought a fleet but I was under the impression that he only brought one.

Well, haven't we established the Jedi aren't the best commanders in history? Furthermore, Kashyyk was a last-ditch attempt, IIRC; there wouldn't be many droids left after attrition.
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

IIRC, there are numerous Acclamators seen landing on Kashyyyk when Yoda arrives at the end of Republic Commando. The force was far more than a single shipload.

Ahh... thank you. Having not read the novelization, and only having seen the movie once, I only had that to work on. besides, in the cross sections, it mentions kashyyyk being a strategic world, for hyperspace roots, wookies, and other stuff (bad memory)

The idea that a planet-wide conflict happens on the battalion scale (as defined numerically by your typical military, i.e. 200-500 soldiers) is a little silly. I always interpreted Yoda's line as being a generic term for detachment/ force.

The line was that Yoda would bring a batallion of clone troopers to Kashyaak.

It sounds more like an additional reinforcement(bodyguard unit for Yoda) than anything, and more importantly, the relief effort was probably manned by non clone elements.

Either that or battalions are huge in SW. Windu did clearly state that Yoda would be taking a battalion of clones.
