SAN BERNARDINO, California (AP) -- A woman says she still plans to marry the man who shot her in the groin and then held her hostage in his family's garage for six days.

Tina Marie Stebbins revealed her intentions in a letter released Monday as her boyfriend, Christian Leroy Lindblad, 37, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for shooting her in June 2002.

"I love Christian today as deeply as I loved him before this awful thing happened to us," Stebbins wrote in a victim impact statement. "We are soul mates." (Watch why she got over getting shot -- 1:34)

She added: "I want to tell you all that I have forgiven Christian. And I pray that Christian has forgiven me for failing him when he needed me most."

Lindblad and his parents tried to cover up the shooting by treating Stebbins with home remedies, according to a San Bernardino County Sheriff's report. They also threatened her young sons and her family, the report said.

Critically wounded, Stebbins was airlifted to a hospital after Lindblad mentioned the incident to a family friend who was a firefighter.

Lindblad pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted murder as his trial was about to begin in early October. He has said the shooting was an accident.

His father, Robert Leroy Lindblad, 72, pleaded guilty in 2003 to being an accessory and was sentenced to three years in prison.

His mother, Shirley Royann Samantha Lindblad, 62, was sentenced to three years probation after pleading guilty to the same charge.

WHAT THE FUCK?

What strikes me as a marvel of self-contradiction is this sentence: "Lindblad pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted murder as his trial was about to begin in early October. He has said the shooting was an accident." How can attempted murder be an accident?

Anyway, this just blows my mind. I can't even IMAGINE what this woman is thinking.

Wow. That woman has some serious psychological problems... I don't know what could possibly make her want to marry someone like that, but she's pretty fucked up and I hope she gets help.

Anyone who thinks now that the little, tolerable abuses and outbursts levelled at them by their partner are "okay, cause things will change and he's really a good person inside", *always* get smacked hard by reality in the end. Even if they don't live to realize their error.

This is utterly unsurprising considering that she turned to an imaginary friend to request assistance in having the man forgive her. It's quite disturbing that she shifts the blame upon herself, claiming to have failed him in his time of need. It's clear that neither she or he are very intelligent. The use of bullshit home remedies by his parents demonstrates their stupidity, and supports the heretability of intelligence.

More. Ignorance of human reproductive function is bad, but wanting to marry a guy who shot you four times, held you hostage for six days, and threatened your children is unbe-fucking-leivable. She even wrote a 4-page letter to the judge begging him to go easy on the guy.

One could argue that the first subject's behavior was a result of Stockholm syndrome, but the brainless shitbag who did not know that one has to fuck to get pregnant cannot be explained by anything other than criminal stupidity.

That's the part which makes it so hard to believe, and you just know she's completely messed up in the head. Cases where women keep going back to their abusers are rather common and it's not much of a stretch for one to still cling to an SO who shot her, but children...god...when the maternal instincts are completely overridden it's just beyond comprehension.

So, let me get this straight: this Christian shot her in the groin four times, held her hostage for six days AND threatened her children. How stupid can you get? The man himself seems to be a sort of maniac and this woman clearly has signs of insanity so big that you could fuse them together, give the bugger scales and call it Godzilla. I dearly hope that her children will be removed from her so that if the crazy woman marries her psycho "boyfriend" he or she cannot harm them.

Interestingly enough, the incident that the syndrome was named after was apparently not really a case of Stockholm Syndrome.

Upon reviewing the actual events, it seems that much of the confusion centers around Clark Olafsson's involvement. What really happened? A mentally disturbed individual (Olsson) tries to hold-up a bank, fails, and ends up taking four hostages. Olsson then tells the police that he wants his friend (Olafsson) to join him, and so, in the interest of a peaceful resolution, Clark agrees to become the second “captor.”

The original supposed victim of “Stockholm Syndrome” is Kristin Ehnemark, who appears to have kept her head while managing, with Olafsson's assistance, to keep Olsson and an army of trigger-happy police from an all-out fire fight.

Here lies the source of the “syndrome.” Olafsson was initially arrested and convicted. Ehnemark was said to be mentally disturbed for trying to defend him. The idea that two calm, unarmed people were more effective than a highly trained and lethally outfitted police force was intolerable to 1970's sensibilities.

Many people still have the event hopelessly confused with the terrorist kidnappings of the 1972 Munich Olympics (source of the misnomer, “Helsinki Syndrome”). The botched bank robbery is simply too mundane to be the source of such an exotic explanation, which really seems to have been more of an attack on the idea of peaceful resolution tactics, particularly when applied to mentally disturbed perpetrators (as if murderers, rapists and armed robbers were not severely dysfunctional).

As to whether Stockholm Syndrome applies to customers of abusive service providers (Microsoft, AOL, Blockbuster Video, etc.), I think this is much more akin to the behavior of a battered spouse. In order to justfy bad choices, people will often rationalize and defend their tormentors, even to the extent of projecting the same aspects onto other people's spouses and providers: “Her husband really is mean to her, and her Mac crashes just as often as my PC.”

I have noticed that people usually love their new cars for at least a year, no matter what kind of lemon they've bought: “Yeah, my Saturn's been in the shop a few times, but I still believe in the concept. By the way, have you seen my new Gateway PC?”

Stupidity indicates an inability to understand and learn from experience. Rephrasing SirNitram, with all the religious fundy idiots out there, it's perfectly reasonable to expect that there will be some poor souls will be brought up so sheltered (and probably home schooled) that they simply do not know anything about reproduction.

What are the chances of an adult woman never being exposed to such information?

More likely, she was unable to understand it when she was exposed perhaps in an indirect way.
