Post by IRG CommandoJoe »

Oh, man, I just found the ultimate resource for FREE MUSIC from the 1890s to 1920s!!! Now I get to look for all of the WWI wartime music and connect it with Nazi wartime music! AMAZING!!! This is the greatest thing ever! The time period with much of my favorite music is now...online...at my fingertips...why am I typing this?

(Passes out from excitement.)

/me sees how long it takes for the Recording Industry Ass. of Amerika to realize there's profit to be had in those dusty old tunes and launches its Nuclear Attack Lawyers of Death™ at that site as a punitive strike...

Yes, it is. University of California. Public domain. Need I say more? :D

Recommended listening so far:

Band version of Liszt's Second Polonaise...simply amazing. I love the band and orchestration arrangements for piano music of that time period. There is nothing like it today. I really wish modern orchestras would perform like they did then. Except obviously the quality of today's recordings would make it sound considerably different. I would definitely love to hear how it sounds.

First Nazi music comparison!!!

There was an American folk song called Blue Bell. The Nazis took that song's melody, changed the title to Heil Deutschland, changed the lyrics and put in what I like to call a hyped up WWI military band with a large chorus.

Which version do you like better? I like the Nazi version better. It's faster-paced with a more powerful-sounding orchestra and chorus and makes me want to go out and DEFEND DER VATERLAND!!! SIEG HEIL! SIEG HEIL! SIEG--oops. :D

I'll be posting much more as I listen more.

Does the RIAA always have to be brought up? Can't we just give that trick a rest for a while? I hate them as much as anybody, but sometimes get so tired of the nigh-continuous bitching.

More recommendations:

It's a Long Way to Tipperary One of the most popular songs of WWI. British.

Over There Another very popular song of WWI. American.

The Horse Trot. Blaze of Glory. Kaiser Friedrich.

These are just a bunch of those great marches typical of the period that I never hear performed anymore. The era of music lost in history is now found again! I just can't get enough of this stuff...(continues clicking like mad.) I just wish the server wasn't so freaking slow.

Got anything non-military related? Like along the lines of "Maybe" by the Ink Spots?

Couldn't find anything. Do your own searching here.

But anyway returning to marches, I found a few good German ones I haven't ever heard before along with ones I've heard before but will mention anyway:

Unter dem Siegesbanner Marsch. Björneborgarnes. This is an interesting one. It stands out from the rest of the music I linked to. Nach Nussdorf. Unser Kaiserhaus.

BUT--there is another website I linked to once before. In fact this is the same website where I learned of the University of California's new site.

http://dismuke.org/

This site has a host of different types of music from the early 1900s up to the 30s and I think maybe even up to the 40s. There are a lot of songs I downloaded from that site that I like. Look for Asleep in the Deep, A Room With a View, Besame and Capitan Betty (both of them are neat xylophone/piano...things), Maurice, The Peanut Vendor, etc. There's a lot of good stuff on there.

I'm sure if you search on this new website you'll find what you're looking for.
