Why was the Tantive IV over Tatooine in the first place?

Post by The Guid »

In A New Hope why has the Tantive IV (which I hope is the Correlian Corvette/Blockade runner we see Leia in the very first few shots) come to Tatooine in the first place?

Leia has the plans - if they could have hit hyperspace presumably they would have gone straight to Alderaan/Yavin or was Obi Wan taking the plans to Alderaan not just a back up plan but neccessary? Maybe because it would need to be smuggled into Alderaan because otherwise the Imperial Fleet would just stop all Correllian Corvettes matching the description of Leia's shop.

Did you miss the part where Leia said "help me obi-wan Kenobi, you're my only hope"? She was there to get him to join the Alliance.

I always assumed that that was because there were stormtroopers on the way. She had been caught so now the backup indeed was the "only hope". So she went to Tatooine to pick up Obi Wan Kenobi and then all of a sudden Darth Vader was there in his favourite ship and she needs to hope the plans get to him through the R2 route.

Leia- "General Kenobi: Years ago, you served my father in the Clone Wars; now he begs you to help him in his struggle against the Empire. I regret that I am unable to present my father's request to you in person; but my ship has fallen under attack and I'm afraid my mission to Alderaan has failed. I've placed information vital to the survival of the rebellion into the memory systems of this R2 unit. My father will know how to retrieve it. You must see this droid safely delivered to him on Alderaan. This is our most desperate hour. Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi; you're my only hope. "

Her mission was to retrieve Obi Wan from his self imposed exile. Bail Organa sent Padme's daughter to get him, a potent message in itself, perhaps even to get her twin in the mix too, or just to show Obi Wan that indeed Bail was looking for his help and it wasn't a ruse to get him out in the open and have the Empire knock him off.

Either or, Leia was sent to get him, recieving the stolen plans may have been a secondary mission or an act of happenstance where the Tantive was the closest and safest Rebellion asset available to 'deliever' the plans to while it was out and about on it's way to get one of the last Jedi's to help the Rebellion.

Unlikely. Tattooine sported a small Imperial garrison, and was ruled by a Hutt notoriously unsypathetic to the Rebel cause. The first explanation is far more likely.

True, though we don't know when Leia recieved the plans on the Tantive, it may have been in a different system while the big 'T' was in transit.

According to Wiki, the Tantive picked up the plans on Toprawa, and then stopped by Tattooine to pick up Obi-Wan, where the ship was ambushed by the Devestator. I know the Toprawa data is correct, and although I am unfamiliar with a diffinative version of the ship's objectives, the stated scenario makes sense.

Unfortunatly I can not watch the movie at this present time and so I just asked a question because it was annoying me. If it offends you, then avoid all posts made by "The Guid" and this problem should go away.

One should keep in mind that Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of the few generals in existence at that time with experience in a full-scale war. The Generals of the Clone Wars were Jedi, and almost all of the Jedi were killed.

There were commanders in the Clone Wars who were neither Jedi nor Clones and survived until ANH. For example, General Dodonna was in command of the Republic fleet beseiging Cato Neimoidia in Labyrinth of Evil. Also, the CIS had there own generals and officers, and I'd guess at least a few of them escaped the empire's wrath.

Some Imperial officers were also involved in the Clone Wars, like Needa and Pellaeon (although that may have been his father.)

Now that I think about it, Leia had to go to Obi-Wan for help because there were few surviving leaders from the Clone Wars who could be trusted by her, ie not Imperial officers or former sepratists.

You'd think that former Sepertist leaders/personel would be an attractive recruit for the rebellion. Granted, they wouldn't want mass murderers who slagged entire populations, but even if the leadership of the CIS was corrupt, I'm sure there were soldiers who actually believed the CIS was doing right and just did their duty.

These people would be a good catch for the Rebellion too.

Meh, so my source had bad punctuation. The point still stands, movie dialouge says that she was sent there by her father to get Obi.

There's a lot of high-ranking Imperial officers that saw action during the Clone Wars, they just weren't necessarily high-ranking at the time. A Old Order Jedi is an incredible asset to the Alliance; both on a tactical and strategic scale.

Also you have Vader hunting the plans. Who else is going to stand up to a Sith other than a Jedi. Ben was simply someone who Bail felt would be perhaps the best person to bring into the Alliance. No matter how you look at it.

Wait, but how did the Rebels know that Obi-wan is still around, but Vader didn't?

If he had any idea of what her mission was, he would have sent more stormies down to capture the droids and Kenobi.

Let's see...Bail Organa was the last person to see either of them go into hiding. Bail made a logical leap to determining where Ben was.

Vader on the other hand had no idea where his former master went....

We should also remember That Obi-wan Kenobi is not just a Jedi, but very high ranking Jedi (a member of the High Coucil of the Jedi Order), so he was one of the few non-clone people who had a full picture of the Clone Wars.

That, and Obi-wan would know where Yoda is

RotS, implies that the 'petition of 2000' members would need a substancial amount of time to put together some sort of 'organization' to counter Palpatines ambitions.

This is a cheesey way of explaining away why it took 20 years for the Rebellion to become strong enough to counter the Empire. But then again, we're talking about major members of the Senate, so it doesn't sound to unreasonable for politicians to take a long fucking time to cover their own asses.

Organa probably was waiting until he thought he had the assets in place, before he went open with his intent. It's probable that the original intent of the 'Rebellion' was pretty similar to that of the CIS, in that it would have been open rebellion, though to 'retake' the goverment rather than succeed.

When Bail and Alderaan gets obliterated, perhaps the 'rebellion leadership' rethought it's position on open rebellion via planetary goverments and went further underground.

Bah, getto edit; this all was to explain the time it took for Bail to 'search out' Obi Wan.
