Every 3d fighting game I've ever played has the same floaty feel. Tekken, Virtua Fighter, that stupid Gash Bell game in the Gamecube kiosk at Wally
... all of them have the same stances, the same manner of punching and moving, and so on. There is no overwhelming similarity when moving from Street Fighter to Guilty Gear or the independent PC fighters.
Don't consider Soul Calibur in this since I havn't played that.

"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

Agreed. Also, Alpha 3 was just an all around excellent game. I wish I still had it.felineki wrote:
And you're honestly missing out if you don't care about SF3.
And Alpha is a different series from both SF2 and SF3. If you've played Alpha 3, Super Turbo, and Third Strike, and notice no difference in gameplay between them, then, well... you're probably comatose.

You're evidently a hardcore fighting-game fan. A normal person isn't going to bother learning the difference between all of those. Growing up back in that era, the one that let you play as Balrog and friends was a big deal. The one that added Fei Long and those guys got some notice. The rest weren't of much interest to the general non-arcade populace.felineki wrote:And Alpha is a different series from both SF2 and SF3. For example, I owned a copy of Super Street Fighter 2 for SNES. When I bought my copy of Street Fighter Alpha 3 for the PS1, I took it for basically the same game, plus some new characters and a helping of general "Hey, it's the next generation!" graphical spiffing. It didn't strike me as a sequel, it struck me as a polished-up port with some new bells and whistles.
Citing the entire tortured arcade lineage that's responsible for one being allowed to air-block in Alpha 3 doesn't change the fact that it's pretty much the same old "Hadoken for the win!" gameplay, and the last Street Fighter I'll ever need.

still, I was apalled, he had the SF guys doing more damage than the MK character's did.

Don't be. God-tier guys like Akuma are freakishly powerful. Akuma, for example, trains at the bottom of the ocean and split Uluru in half with one punch.DarkSilver wrote:When the creator decided he wanted a reason for Street Fighter to kick Mortal kombat's ass...2000AD wrote:WTF? They definitely got a major upgrade for Marvel vs. Capcom 2 then, one of the toughest trios to beat on the pro circuit is Magneto/Cammy/Guile or Jill.Ghost Rider wrote:Yeah, that's why the Marvel cast was eventually made better.LordShaithis wrote:As a game concept, Marvel vs Capcom is a bit like The Culture vs Smurfs. I can suck up a lot of BS in the name of game balance, but when the Hulk is punching Chun Li, and she doesn't instantly go squish... Well, piss off.
SF cast essentially got bad DBZ upgrades and still suck in the game at any high level.
Just watched the Raiden one, this guy has really...interesting ideas on how the characters should act. That being said, the quality jump between the first movie and the second movie is amazing. Everything has improved by leaps and bounds, the animation, the choreography...hell, even the plot, but that ain't saying much .

Given the fact that other retards had bought four new Maddens in the time since I had last bought a Street Fighter, I didn't feel too bad picking up Alpha 3 when I did. There were a good number of new characters, after all, and the graphics were nice. It wasn't really a new game to me, but it was shiny and had more options to tweak, and didn't require me to move to the room where the SNES was when I wanted to play it.Utsanomiko wrote:I went through the exact same feelings about the series as you did, minus buying anything after Super Street Fighter 2. Silly Prawn.
That said, I wish I had grabbed Alpha 2. I liked having a different end-boss that made sense for each character, rather than having two lines of text explain why everyone in the world wanted to fight Bison. And the audio in Alpha 2 was much better. The audio in Alpha 3 was... strange.

The Soul Calibur series is good games - not so much emphasis on insane-to-pull-off button combos as some other fighting games.Hamel wrote:Every 3d fighting game I've ever played has the same floaty feel. Tekken, Virtua Fighter, that stupid Gash Bell game in the Gamecube kiosk at Wally

As far as I'm concerned, I have never played a good Mortal Kombat game and I probably never will. The horrible graphical quality of the games is matched only by the jerkiness of the moves and the horrible annoying quality of the music. (The only exception to that being, of course, the "Mortal Kombat" theme song).
MK is the Jerry Springer of the fighting-game world. It almost poisoned me towards fighting games in general; thankfully, I found a "Samurai Shodown" arcade box before I'd lost any chance of liking the genre.

All joking about movies aside, SF beats the shit outta MK for quality gameplay.

Bah. I don't like cartoony, Japanese-themed crap. I much prefer MK in all departments. It's characters alone kick the shit out of any SF character in terms of imagination and cool factor.

Well the Scorpion vs. Ryu fight was very well done, but overall I'd have to agree with you.Bah. I don't like cartoony, Japanese-themed crap. I much prefer MK in all departments. It's characters alone kick the shit out of any SF character in terms of imagination and cool factor.
Anyway, I much prefer this MK crossover for pure, simple amusement value.

The only thing broken on that team is Magneto. Cammy is a good situational assist, but Guile/Jill aren't much to talk about really.Grasscutter wrote: They definitely got a major upgrade for Marvel vs. Capcom 2 then, one of the toughest trios to beat on the pro circuit is Magneto/Cammy/Guile or Jill.
The most dangerous team out there IMO, is MSS (Mag/Storm/Sent) because everyone can beat your face in on point, Sent's Drone is fantastic zoning and you can safe DHC into Sent's super anytime, anywhere, anyhow. And if it hits, you can just Laser X RP X Drone Super again. Sent RP is beefcake and you really can't take more than a few hits, but I don't think it's as versatile as Drones.
TBH, MSP (Mag/Storm/Psy) is probably a little more dangerous with perfect play, because MSP can triangle jump your ass until you wiff a block and he takes you up for an infinite, but you can't really do the same to MSP because Psylocke is too good at shutting down the rushdown. But really, MSP comes down to perfectly putting together 20-30+ hit combos are are difficult to execute, while MSS has that option, as well as knocking down your lifebar 15% at a time with Sentinel. And of course that DHC is sick.
If you look up the list of top teams, really, there is 4 characters that stand out. Mag, Storm, Sent, and Cable. The best teams are really a mix of 2 or 3 of them, plus 1 assist to setup the playstyle.
Personally, my favorite team is Spiral/Sent/Cable. Zone with Spiral/Sent Drone to battery up, then Cable to AHVB. It's a team with a low margin or error though, because outside of Cable, it doesn't really have a "swingman" that can wipe out the other team fast. There's Sent, but he doesn't have a good DHC partner and the assists are only mediocre at best. I like IM/Cable/Psy as well, it's a little more powerful, but less fun to play. I guess I just prefer control fights over rushdown fights.
Oh, really?Vympel wrote:Bah. I don't like cartoony, Japanese-themed crap. I much prefer MK in all departments. It's characters alone kick the shit out of any SF character in terms of imagination and cool factor.
In MK you've got...hm...ninja, undead ninja, dragon ninja, robot, scantily-clad female ninjas, Bruce Lee ripoff, and a black dude.
In Street Fighter you have characters from all over the world, with wildly different backstories. And they don't look like shit, either.

You're simply picking out characters from different MK games at random. All the characters have cool, imaginative backstories (lighting god, undead ninja, four armed monsters, murderer+criminal, the cop chasing him etc).Molyneux wrote: Oh, really?

In SF, you have Ken and Ryu. Who have identical moves and are mirror images of each other. Somehow, this is acceptable to people. Say it with me: LAME.
In MK you have characters from all over the realms. Much cooler. And they look way cooler. Oh yes.In Street Fighter you have characters from all over the world, with wildly different backstories. And they don't look like shit, either.
And in MK, we fight to the death.
