No worse is that the ship only HAS two fighters and managed to last as long as it did....

That's because of three things:

#1. The White Base was a pretty tough ship.

#2. With so many main characters, the ship had Character Shields from Hell.

#3. For a good portion of the One Year War, the Zeons were trying to capture the White Base. By the time that no longer became a concern, it was more often than not with an entire fleet.

You have to remember that Mobile Suit Gundam tried to get away from the Super Robot craze of the 70's. Being the first "real robot" show, it still had some Super Robot elements like that funky launche sequence. Most likely it was put in to satisfy Clover, the toy company that was backing Gundam at the time. The G-Armor, bright colors on the mecha among other things were the result of pressure from Clover.

You see, the Gundam and White Base were prototypes in the Federation's Top Secret Project V. Had he just shot the thing, he've come back empty handed, the exact opposite of his actual mission.

But I guess the idea that they had a reason to be capturing the ship was a bit beyond your mental capacity, huh?

Then they ambushed and killed Garma Zabi(Who was set up to be ambushed and killed by Char Aznable).

After that, the Trojan Horse(Zeon codename for the White Base) was little more than a nuisance, as they had already delivered some of the test data to the Federation, and they were testing out new prototypes elsewhere, like the GM[E] Terry Sanders, Jr. was piloting shortly before Giren Zabi's speech at Garma's funeral.

safely back at their labs, right?

Most were killed, and the only survivor who was known was in no mental condition to be of use to anybody. Everyone else was either on the ship(it was, after all, the only one there), or perhaps scattered around the Earth Sphere..
