Any way to force AGP 4x?

Post by Darth Wong »

I have an AGP 8x motherboard with a videocard that seems to work better at AGP 4x, but I can't find any way to change this. It's an Asus P4P800. Anyone got an ideas?

The Omega Drivers have an app called SmartGart, which lets you set AGP speed. I cant vouch for the results tho, but Im using Omega myself and am happy with it.

SmartGart is part of the stock ATi drivers.

There *should* be a BIOS option that lets you set the AGP speed, I know I've seen it somewhere on my Socket A Gigabyte (though the options for that are 2 or 4x).

Ah, another poor sod like me with the P4P800 and all of its quirks. I particularly like how you can only get USB hot-swapping working by disabling USB 2.0.

Really? Didn't know that. And does it work? Im curious myself, can you set a lower agp setting and see the actual results?

I had some problems with SmartGart a few months back on a Radeon 9500, agp didnt work at all. Its now ok with 9800 and an Asus A7N8X

I'm using an NVidia graphics card on this machine, so no ATI driver solutions for me. I saw an option for AGP 8x and 4x on my NVidia drivers but it was grayed out.

I think Rivatuner has an option to select the AGP command rate. Haven't used it in a while though; I could be wrong.

Have you tried flashing to the latest BIOS?

A friend of mine swears by Intel chipset mobos and constantly rubs it in that I had to switch from an nF3 to a VIA K8T800 based board to get USB 2 working properly.
I'll have to make sure he reads this.
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."- General Sir Charles Napier

I don't play around with AGP settings, my PC has enough issues as is.
