There was also the case when Iowa got within 11 miles of a CVN group and scored the carrier as sunk, only to be wiped out by the return missile salvo from the escorts. Fact remains that for every sinking you have countless victories for the carrier group.Ted wrote:Didn't you hear about the exercise in the gulf a few years back?Sea Skimmer wrote:Horrors a crappy SSN, the USN force is doomed! Where an SSN was the attacker and was to go in and sink the carrier?
In that it sneaked up so close that the SSN captain didn't need the magnifying periscope to see it?
And then promptly sunk the carrier and got away only to be trapped 2 days later as they ran out of gulf?

But a trade off of an SSN for a CVN is pretty good, considering that IF al -Qaeda acquired a sub, it is quite possible that they could sink a CVN that way.Sea Skimmer wrote: There was also the case when Iowa got within 11 miles of a CVN group and scored the carrier as sunk, only to be wiped out by the return missile salvo from the escorts. In reality it's going to be a half dozen or more subs lost for a chance of sinking the carrier. And that’s with USN or RN nuke boats which are a generation ahead of everything but a dozen odd Russian jobs.Ted wrote:But a trade off of an SSN for a CVN is pretty good, considering that IF al -Qaeda acquired a sub, it is quite possible that they could sink a CVN that way.Sea Skimmer wrote: There was also the case when Iowa got within 11 miles of a CVN group and scored the carrier as sunk, only to be wiped out by the return missile salvo from the escorts. Al –Qaeda would be very hard pressed to get anything better then a foxtrot, even a Kilo would be a marginal threat because of the limited endurance of all SSK's. Even then, its more likely they'll get a bunch of SCUD B's and chuck them at Qatar then obtain even a 1950's SS.
Assuming that the occassional victory for a top of the line SSN against a carrier indicates any notabul risk from an old SS or mabey SSK without a good crew is poor logic at best.

I only suggested it because I thought it would start some kind of sci.military.naval-style punchup.Sea Skimmer wrote:
