What do you like to wank about in your fanfics?

Post by Sidewinder »

Excluding Mary Sues, self-inserts, and other author avatars, what do fanfic writers on this board like to wank about?

For me, it's transforming robots and master swordsmen, with War of the Worlds being a perfect example of Transfan-wank. And you?
Please do not make Americans fight giant monsters.

Those gun nuts do not understand the meaning of "overkill," and will simply use weapon after weapon of mass destruction (WMD) until the monster is dead, or until they run out of weapons.

They have more WMD than there are monsters for us to fight. (More insanity here.)

Though I haven't posted any here, I tend to emphasize the power of insane people whenever I write. The average-Joe-nobodies are perfectly sane, while the batshit crazy are made up of political leaders or superheroes capable of devastating entire cities. As a character gains power in my fics, their mental condition correspondingly deteriorates.

One that I started, but didn't get very far on, involved a modern-day vampire who was channel-surfing one day when by accident he came across an episode of Sesame Street. If I finished it, it probably would have ended badly.

I don't write fanfics, but I have my own story.

The most wanktacular thing in it is the Predecessor Spire attack ships. Ridiculously powerful starships that teleport around their hapless foes while draining their energy and vaporizing them with arcane energy pulled out of nowhere.

Other than that, light infantry which could curbstomp a space marine. Naked.

</:wanker: >

It actually makes sense, sometimes.

Heavy missile barages that put Macross to shame. Ships with thousands of VLS cells which can reload these VLS cells allowing for staggering missile volley's.

I don't like to wank out my characters, or even give them undo character shields (although that seems to inevitably happen), but I have on occasion wanked Force powers a bit. Not their users necissarily, but the effects of an attack.

I have ships that blatantly violate the laws of thermodynamics. Does that count?

Then there's the ones that put Dr. Who to shame in how large the inside is compared to the outside. And they treat most of (our) physical law like inmates at a Federal Prison would treat peewee herman.

I like to 'wank' out the emotions of war. Battle fatigue, raw emotions, the bonds one forges durring times of strife. I am comfortable in the notion of 'you fight for the guy next to you, not the politician back on the homefront' type mentality.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

The only good spamming is missile spamming.

Librarians, maybe? Markus Delgado is too dangerous for his good, though that's more to do with what he's wearing, but still; he could take a tank with his hands. Not bare, but his hands none the less.
What is Project Zohar?

Here's to a certain mostly harmless nutcase.

No, just your normal, ordinary librarian in a strength and reflex enhancing suit with death dealling shields. If he was an Epistolary then it wouldn't be an out of the ordinary attempt to make librarians look cool.

I haven't read any stories starring the "Markus Delgado" you mentioned. Why would he nead a strength-enhancing suit with shields? Is he a part-time mercenary, a part-time vampire hunter, or something?

The size of the Empire and the galaxy as a whole is a favorite point. Usually suggested by having someone not know a detail (in "Surely You Can't Be Serious," a Senator has difficulty remembering a particular Moff, and then misstates how he killed himself, confusing him with another) or entire parts of the story (in The Test of Wills, Shug Ninx and Salla Zend have never heard of the Princess Leia, didn't know that Han had become a general, and didn't recognize the name Luke Skywalker). Other favorite points are the presence of mundane details (Salla Zend's reflections on the various licenses and permits she has to have to be a certified Master Spacer) or the limitless power of the Force (prominently displayed by Luke and the Emperor in The Test of Wills).

Admittedly, though, this author's favorite passtime in writing is tongue-in-cheek references to other stories. There are, in varying degrees of obviousness, references to Dune, Star Trek, Metroid, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Peter Pan, InuYasha, Sonic the Hedgehog, Dracula, Superman II, Starfox, Doctor Who, and Foundation and Empire, among others.

I suppose the thing I let gain a little too much power in the moose rebellion universe is possibily the humouron and poeton energy particles - they're quite well developed in terms of their parodying some of the physics stuff I learnt, but I attribute them a massive amount of destructive power which I think I'm having to start to tone down to prevent too much advantage being given to one side or to prevent the threat of universal armageddon obliterating my world thanks to a stray humouron interaction.

And maybe the moose monsters, but as 14 foot tall titanic near indestructible warlords, I think that's pretty much a given. Can't be everywhere at once though.

In general, as I rarely write full fiction and just bounce around ideas in my head:

For definate wank, Formation Fighting, probably. If I were to not have a set conclusion while writing, the more disciplined and ordered society (Spartans, Rome, Prussia, etc.) would always beat the human wave attackers or more enlightened citizen-militias (Athens, Gaul, Russia, etc.). Somehow, when you hold the line in a perfect little square your unit suddenly becomes teh uber. I guess historically it was like that, but not as completely one-sided.

Power.

In my technocentric fics, it's all about the uber-tech. And while not Culture level crazy, they could curbstomp Star Wars.

In my 'superhero' stories, I write about characters that could go toe-to-toe with the JLA with little problem.

And my fics that combine the two just tend to get crazily stupid in their wankishness.

The love-struck near-diety-like female pining after a mundane male lead.

Compact, efficient cliche package that's prone to pop up in my fics. :P

Eh, I have ship-entities that can eat entire universes. And fart them, but that's what you have to do, you know?

Infact, that's just a one off part of a story: A ship is leading on another one, and dumps a few billion universes as chaff over "a few seconds" to slow down an enemy... time being what it is, it may have been a few seconds, or it may have been a few million years. It's arguable.
