It originated in condensed internet chatter (like "how r u?") and was probably image-macro'ed by the friendly goons at Something Awful.
For what everreason, I had this idea that The name of the Owl was the "Orly" owl...

I found some adorable pictures of animals that can and probably should be net-speak, but my photoshop-fu is weak.

It's just you, after all how hard is it to grab a bunny and toss it on a keyboard?

The cookie-eating one looks faker to me... the wrinkle below its face almost makes it look like a sock puppet.

Nah, bunnies are pretty fat... It's part of what makes them great pets, actually; they're soft and fluffy. It's also possible the bunny is wearing a sweater. There's whiskers and too much detail for me to doubt the cookie one. And while it wouldn't be too hard to just stick one on a keyboard, it just doesn't look real to me.

Easy, but I'd expect the weight of the bunny to press some of the keys

A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

Well, I actually zoomed in and look at it closeup, and it does appear the keys are being pressed down. But there's no (visible) whiskers and the fur seems awfully monotone...

Wikipedia wrote:Unlike the catchphrase, the origin of the O RLY owl is known. The O RLY owl was first created on an Off-Topic, htttp://www.off-topic.net, when the word "o rly" was filtered to "owl". Owl quickly became widespread amongst many community websites such as fark.com, spawning many new image macros involving owls typically to display certain emotions such as laughter, enjoyment, anger, or disapproval. After the creation of the O RLY owl it was reposted and modified frequently, usually in response to various subjects, and usually for comedic value. The O RLY owl eventually spread to other web sites, spawning even more variation. Another phrase used is NOWAI(no way) which doesnt really save any time but still is there.

The fact that that's even actually possible strikes me as quite sad, really.
I don't get it.
