Indeed. Mastery of aircraft in BF1942 and BF2 has always eluded me. I mean I can NOT DIE, but that's hardly ace material.

I guess that being a hardcore simmers makes me hate a simplified engine.

How about a brand new one? The choiceless choice.

You have been fighting against the evil blighting the land for 90% of the game, so naturally everyone you run across will assume you are a rotten son of a bitch and ask you to do stuff like, oh, enslave the utopian farm community of innocents. I mean, who would object to enslaving innocents, right?

How about when you are offered a reward for something, but can refuse it and recieve it anyway? Even better, how about when you refuse that reward you get something ten times better! And if you ask for more, you get LESS! Lots of options there.

Perhaps worst of all, when you are offered multiple ways to do something but only one is correct. I mean, you can TRY the other ways, but they are doomed to failure via the dreaded "deus ex machina". To add insult to injury, your party will always know exactly which way will work, and remind you how much you suck for choosing another way of doing things.

Honorable mention goes to being able to get an item that will *obviously* be obsolete in the next two or three fights as the "evil but high pay reward" or "a larger exp bonus due to insight or some shit gained from your goodness". Yeah, because we all like useless stuff and hate levels.

This may be obscure for many... but my vote is for Samurai Warriors (PS2, 2004) and Ishikawa Goemon's fucking castle stages.

Suuuuure, make the slowest guy in the game have to meander around on side objectives indoors (no horse equipping), kill any chance of a decent clear time (for time attack purposes)...

sounds like some one needs some training :D
I have no problem using them, but then I played BF: Vietnam to learn flying helis and silent heroes (BF1942 mod) to master them.

Just make a lan server and practice flying by yourself. Eventually you'll get to be like yours truly and get over 70 kills with the F-15 in a 16 player game. :P

I don't recall if anyone's already mentioned this one, but:

Time trial gauntlets.

i.e., you now have 30 seconds to pass through this { trap, monster, jumping puzzle, whatever } infested area before { the door locks, you are killed }!

While there's some mission types I hate unless they're done really well, I hate any mission where there's absolutly no room for error for what ever reason

It's a lot easier on the PS2.

Hmm, one of my pet peeves is boss fights in general, especially in games like NWN, Icewind Dale, and BG. I *really* get annoyed when the boss comes out and is so difficult (or more often, requires some special set of spells or whatever in order to effectivly fight them, which takes a while to figure out) that you end up having to try an innumerable amount of times in order to defeat them. It really breaks up the gameplay, and seriously hampers my SOD =) The game designers are just lazy, and should provide a means for the party to discover how to defeat the bosses (e.g. have an NPC that tells the party: Boss XYZ is really resistant to all spells and weapons, except....).

I hate Boss Fights that are completely out of place. Like randomly placing cowboys with machine guns in the middle of a sci-fi FPS. With absolutely no explanation as to why.

Really? It just took me a couple of tries to get the hang of flying in that game...now I keep stealing planes from the Las Venturas airport and flying all over the map ^_^

I have no trouble flying helicopters in SA, but the airplanes feel unstable and incredibly underpowered. Then again, maybe my flight sim geared reflexes are actually ruining it. :P

I was just playing Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and there's one part where you pull a lever which opens a door at the end of a long hallway. Unfortunately it also activates a plethora of traps and nasty things to slow you down while the door slowly closes. If you take too long, the door closes before you get there and the girl you're with, (who always gets the easy way through everything,) makes some comment about, "Oh, now you're going to have to go back and do it all over again." The prince's reply is the best. It's something along the lines of, "Oh, you think?", or "No kidding!"

Ok, I laugh, because it's precisely what I would say in the circumstances.

I was also disappointed with the planes. Instead of the useless mission to rig the dam with explosives, I was expecting to crash that shitty prop plane that one had to jump from into the dam itself (load with explosives, of course, to actually be effective).

That would be counterproductive, seeing as you had to blow the dam at the exact moment you started the casino heist. Though it was stupid the police didn't find the bombs after your little invasion...

Yes, but it would have been much more fun. I'm sure that the geek could have rigged the plane to be radio-controlled without any trouble.

I don't think he was trying to blow the whole dam. Just the turbines.

Blowing the whole dam (which is what I imagine a plane loaded with explosives would do to it) would be a Very Bad Thing. Although if the flood of water doesn't hit Las Venturas it would certainly occupy the cop's attention...

Ever since goldeneye at least I've hated the fucking escort the dickhead missions. I was stuck on that level for ages and came up with all sorts of ace remote mine plans to do it right. Eventually I worked out if you just charged the enemy every time they appeared, you could fuck them all. The slow moving thing really bugs me too in these.

Grinding is the shitest gameplay ever. What the fuck is the point in making gameplay where you could fucking automate it and it'd be as interesting?

Plain old courier missions get old fast. Courier missions with unreasonable "halflives" of the ingredients are even worse. The most recent example of this I can think of is in Gun, where you have to get a horse to the Stable and talk to the guy in under like 30 seconds. I mean why?! Will the horse IMPLODE if you get there in 32 seconds? And come on, if I have just jumped off the horse, and the horse is in the fucking stable, WHY do I still fail if I'm just out of range of the guy i have to talk to? NOTHING would be different in regards to the horse if I talked to him! Fucking stupid.

I agree with the nonsense about ordinary guys being able to take ridiculous amounts of punishment and keep on smiling, when they're not visibly any better than anyone else. You could argue that they're insane/hopped up on PCP etc [sometimes], but in such cases, shooting critical points should put them down for the count.

Personally, I think in FPS games there should be the option to do a mission stealthily, but if you fail, you should get people rushing for the alarm buttons like on goldeneye, and you get to put them down before they trigger the alarm and you get rushed by an army of enemies. In such a case, the building's security measures can reasonably end your mission, like locking doors, gas, whatever. Someone making eye contact with you would not stop you if you were a real spy.
