'Ai! ai!' wailed Legolas. 'A Balrog! A Balrog is come!'
Gimli stared with wide eyes. 'Durin's Bane!' he cried, and letting his axe fall he covered his face.
'A Balrog,' muttered Gandalf. 'Now I understand.' He faltered and leaned heavily on his staff. 'What an evil fortune! And I am already weary.'

I did not recieve a single item I put on my Christmas list, despite it clearly itemized with prices and availability, handed out a month in advanced. I'm too annoyed to bother listing what I did recieve.

That's exactly why you didn't get any of it. You're thinking in geek mode. As a geek if everyone who expected presents from me did that, and I had enough money for everyting expected of me, I'd be thrilled. No geussing, no dicking around no worries. But non-geeks have problems with that. They fail to see the convienence and just see it as snotty/whiney (I want THIS mommy, and if I don't get it I'll crrrrrrrrrryyyyy)/not sentimental. Really the best way to do it is to just ask for money instead, say that the stuff that'd make you happy is too hard to find/rare/expensive (make something up if need be) and that they shouldn't even bother and that cash is fine. Then you can just buy what you need yourself if it's specific enough that you'd feel the need for an itemized list. Otherwise the only way to get something very specific is to have the person getting it be cool enough to know that they'll never get the right thing and just have you point it out to them. Now that's one posibility, the other is that you expected people who were functionally illiterate in a field to get something specific from that field (specific anime/manga, computer parts, video games). This is doomed to failure because you're expecting too much of some one. I mean if someone had you buy a book for them written in say, klingon or some shit and it was in the middle of the klingon section of the book store what are the chances of you getting the right one ? Yeah that's what I thought. Again, that'd be solved with the cash excuse. You have to be especially careful not to hurt someone's feelings in this case though, because the less someone knows about something the angrier the average person tends to get when how little they know is pointed out.DPDarkPrimus wrote:I did not recieve a single item I put on my Christmas list, despite it clearly itemized with prices and availability, handed out a month in advanced. Who the fuck are you to lecture me? You think that just because I make out a Christmas list of things I want, I'm a spoiled brat? Fuck you and the high horse you rode in on. My dad LIKES me making a list, because he doesn't know the sort of stuff I want.darthdavid wrote:That's exactly why you didn't get any of it. You're thinking in geek mode. "Just ask for cash or a gift card?" Do you even listen to yourself? What a great holiday it would be, to wake up Christmas morning and to find a single wrapped item under the tree. "Oh, it's a gift card. How thoughtful." You don't know how Christmas works in my family, so don't fucking presume to know what's right or wrong.
And for the record, nothing I asked for was hard to find, rare, or expensive. It's not hard to find if I told where you could purchase it from, it's not rare because everything on my list was made available in the past couple of months, and hey, guess what? If you put a bunch of items on a list, you shouldn't expect to recieve them ALL... you just throw a lot of them on so you don't know what to recieve.
I'm SO SORRY if I spent hour thinking of and purchasing thoughtful gifts for all the members of my family, in addition to something they've requested, and expected to recieve the same treatment.
You think this only proves your point that I'm a little whiner, smartass? Well, maybe you should think about how perturbed you would be if all the accusations you flung at me were applied to you, quite unjustified.
In summary: Blow me.
EDIT: And I'd like to point out that the sum total of ALL the items I put on my list were comparable to the gift totals of what many members recieved. I guess everyone here is "spoiled".

Speak for yourself asshole. I asked for nothing for Christmas, in fact I specifically told them that I was content with a card if nothing else. The fact that they remembered me on christmas, and though well enough of me to buy a gift is what makes me happy.DPDarkPrimus wrote: EDIT: And I'd like to point out that the sum total of ALL the items I put on my list were comparable to the gift totals of what many members recieved. And hey, DD, how about some context about why I'm so pissed, eh?
I've been putting in extra hours at work, so I've got next to no time to schedule any stuff with family or friends.
My illness has been acting up lately.
I've had insomnia for the past several weeks. You think I want to be up at 4 AM posting this shit?
And hey, you know what I REALLY wanted for Christmas? I wanted to be with my girlfriend. Aren't I a materialistic cunt?
You see, I've felt like shit for the past two weeks or so, and the one thing I wanted more than anything this holiday... I couldn't have. So EXCUSE ME if I'm angry that I didn't recieve a single thing I asked for, no temporary distractions from my doldrums. And yes- in fact, just one of the items would have made me happy.

What I received:
Movies:
Krull!! My wife knows what I like!
BSG 2 (kind of... maybe it's actually Firefly in disguise)
books:
Some Sci Fi, Peter David, ST, WH40k and occult books I bought with gift certicate money (plus huge discount)
Doctor Who's Monsters and Villains
Codex: Daemonhunters
And as soon as I get a decent chance, I'm going to transform the rest of my gift certificate money into The Sabbat Worlds Crusade and the Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting Primer. Why? Because I'm a fanboy dammit!
Models:
Some random Heroscape models that will soon become Inquisitors or Daemons...
Chaos Megaforce!! My wife really knows what I like!
More CSMs and some IG! Yay! My army of mutant heretics nears completion...
Some paints and a paint brush.
Possibly more to come due to Hannukah and the largeness of my extended family, plus little candies and the like.
Anyway, something funny happened this Christmas: both me and my father bought my brother Firefly and Serenity. And we both had to get Serenity in Full Screen because that was all that was left! Anyway, I think we'll give him our BS 2 and keep the other stuff.
I still need to get something else for my dad and my brother, but they haven't given me a list to work from yet... probably not until January.

Lots of clothes, my family have decided i'm not too old to be dressed all in black all the time. Blue fucking jeans for the love of Joe. I haven't worn blue denim since i was 10. Lots of colourful shirts. On the plus side i got 2 bottles of after shave, Hugo and CK One. My extended family bought me enough socks to outfit the 101st Imperial Legion and enough deoderant to cover up their BO, wonder if they are trying to tell me something. I also for many many bottles of alcohol which i shall open today since I'm off for a few days.
RIP Yosemite Bear

Okay, two things. First, Christmas Morning for us started a bit late so it ended up being sort of a whole-day event. Second, darthdavid needs to blow me, too. Uts and I have made detailed lists for our mother for years: it's not about being materialistic but making things much easier for her, and she prefers knowing exactly what we want, how much they cost, and any other issues she should be aware of.
Now for what all I got yesterday:
DVDs
Overall I am very happy with what I received, and had a nice Christmas.
Now for what all I got yesterday:
DVDs
- Doctor Who: "Pyramids of Mars".
- The Iron Giant Special Edition.
- Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection, Volume 4 (Girl in Gold Boots, Hamlet, Overdrawn at the Memory Bank, Space Mutiny).
- Super Dimension Fortress Macross box set. These are the AnimEigo releases, in a nice hard box from Harmony Gold.
- Walt Disney Treasures – The Chronological Donald, Volume One (1934-1941).
- Björk, Family Tree box set.
- Boards of Canada, In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country EP.
- Boards of Canada, Geogaddi.
- The Essential Howard the Duck.
- Hacking Video Game Consoles by Benjamin Heckendorn.
- The Notenki Memoirs: Studio GAiNAX and the Men Who Created Evangelion by Yasuhiro Takeda.
- Sandman Mystery Theater, Volume 1: The Tarantula.
- Tales From Development Hell: Hollywood Film-Making the Hard Way by David Huges
- Warriors of Legend: Reflections of Japan in Sailor Moon by Jay Novak & Sushil K. Rudranath.
- Godard; Images, Sounds, Politics by Colin MacCabe. This was a real surprise, as I didn't ask for it at all. My mom just remembered when I discussed it with her about a month ago: that it was an out of print book I had from the U of I Library and I would easily consider stabbing someone to get a hold of it. Good thing I had it on our Amazon wishlist, I guess.
- Bandai EX-23 1/1700 scale Salamis & Magellan model kit set. Capital ships from Mobile Suit Gundam.
- Last Exile 1/8 scale Alvis E. Hamilton PVC figure.
- Star Wars Evolutions: Anakin Skywalker to Darth Vader action figure set.
- Transformers Cybertron Optimus Prime. Known as Galaxy Convoy in Japan.
- Transformers Cybertron Starscream & Vector Prime two-pack
- A 2006 Shirow Masamune calendar.
- A journal with a magnetic locking cover.
- A long-sleaved grey-tan shirt.
- A Homestar Runner Star t-shirt.
