Can anyone help me alter an image to be a useable avtar ?

Post by bilateralrope »

I have an image I would like to use for my avatar pic, but although its 100x100pixels , its size 7KB. Since the board limits avatar pics to 6k I need to reduce the file size on it. Its a .gif file

What programs do you recomend I use (and what methods within them) to get the file size down to 6KB with minamal loss of quality ?

I'm running windows xp, so only suggest programs that will work for me.

For this sort of thing, irfanview should be all that is required.
For example, suppose I wrote a book that within 30 years of the moon landing millions of people could be duped by bad science and endless hectoring into believing that it didn't happen... nah, can't do that, too unbelievable for a fantasy novel, right?--Terry Pratchett, The new Discworld Companion

Yes, but then I would also have to ask again the next time I want to change my avatar.

True.

Try this

Download and install the Image Resizer powertool.

Then rightclick on the image and resize it to 90*90 or somthing, that shold work.

Another technique I've found when using IrfanView that comes in handy. Go into the Thumbnail view and get the portion of the image you want as an av to desirable size. Screenshot it, then paste into the regular IrfanView window. Crop as necessary to get the 100x100 size, and save at 80% quality. Almost all of the time that will get you your desired size if the image is of the right proportions. (Although sometimes it can be difficult depending on the image in question).

I have actually been using irfanview for a while to browse through saved images but I never thought to see what else it can do. General Zod's tip about reducing image quality worked well.

Thanks for all the help
