Best and Worst Films of 2005
Moderator: Edi
The Best:
1) Serenity (Serenity kicked the shit out of everything else! Bitch!)
2) Revenge of the Sith (Best SW movie ever)
3) Fantastic Four (enjoyable superhero movie, good enough for me)
And, well, uh, that's about it. I didn't really see any other big movies for this year. Well, saw the end of Stealth, which was cool from an action flick POV.

1-4 are in no particular order of best.
1. Serenity
2. Constantine
3. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
4. Batman Begins
5. ROTS*
*Revenge of the Sith barely makes this list, because the first half of the movie sucks ass. Lucas fucked up the space battle, gave the battle droids really wimpy voices, R2 wank, shitty lines and horrible scenes, and it'd cut away from scenes (like the Kashyyk battle) just as they were getting interesting.
The last half though kicked ass, thus it made the list.

I worked at a theater this summer, so I got to see almost all the big summer movies for free (every week I got 5 free passes). I made smart choices and saw only the good films. My favorites were (of course) Revenge of the Sith and Batman Begins. The worst movie I saw this year definately has to be Bewitched, which my sister bitched me into going. I think I might have forced a laugh once or twice throughout that entire movie.

I need to add the movie Dark Water. It seemed like they ran out of enough time for Connelly's character to develop, so they just introduced the ending and killed her off.

That I've seen:
Best:
1. Sin City
2. Batman Begins
3. Kong
4. Mr. and Mrs. Smith
5. ROTS
Worst:
Exorcism of Emily Rose: disgusting and yawn
The decent:
Alexander (not bad. The battle against Darius was superb) (may be 2004, not sure)
War of the Worlds (many, many issues but the ubercool tripods made me sit trough it)
Doom (I especially liked it because I saw it right after Emily Rose (and was in a mood of seeing some bloodshed))

That movie was so aggravating. Just when it seemed like they were building up to do something genuinely clever, they let me down. Oh, and let's not forget the rediculous gun battle at the end.wautd wrote:4. Mr. and Mrs. Smith

Fuck no, I wasn't expecting a serious movie. But I was expecting something half-way decent. The gun battle was just pathetic. Not exciting at all.wautd wrote:What? I'm dead serious, that's what it seemed like. We see and hear flashbacks about her childhood, how she had a shit-for-brains mother, and so forth, and we start to get some insights into what she's like, when suddenly, WHAM! She has a vision, finds a dead girl in the water tank, and the girl tries to kill her daughter.JME2 wrote:Thanks for spoiling it (I kid, I kid)...Guardsman Bass wrote:I need to add the movie Dark Water. Really? Although I didn't care too much for the main character, the segments of Emily's exorcism and possession were spectacularly cool.Exorcism of Emily Rose: disgusting and yawn

Revenge of the Sith was one of the best movies I've ever seen. Like The Empire Strikes Back it rose above the level of the other Star Wars movies (that is, the ultimate Saturday matinee movies) to truly operatic heights. It's the best of the series.
Now let's get to the bad movies:
When I got Serenity confused with Serendipity I was the butt of jokes (deservedly so). Now that I've seen it on DVD, I think the John Cusack/ Kate Beckinsale chick-flick was better. Also, there needs to be a law against movies based on TV shows. Ten years ago, SPY Magazine pulled a prank of calling Hollywood agents to see which stars they could get to agree to be in Hogan's Heroes: The Movie. I get the sinking feeling just such a movie is coming soon.
Stealth was so bad I hated it without even seeing it. Just the soundtrack pissed me off. Glenn Hughes is a great heavy metal singer, so what the fuck is he doing covering Nights In White Satin?
I have no interest in watching remakes of old movies or TV shows, especially when I thought the originals sucked.
I used to give middling movies and even ones I had good reason to believe were crap a chance at the theatre. Not any more. Now I'll only watch a few movies in theatres and leave the rest for DirecTV or DVD. Part of it is the fact that I'm kinda shacked up now instead of dating, but I wonder if the alleged box office downturn is the fact that fewer people are taking chances on theatrical releases and waiting for cable or the video store when it comes to middle rank movies.
I liked 40 Year Old Virgin even though I'm a big Asia fan. Wedding Crashers was good dumb fun, too.
Sin City was a mixed bag. On the one hand, it reeked of all the things I despise about Tarantino movies, namely the phony tough guy shtick. Bruce Willis trying to pass himself off as an ass-kicker is about as convincing as Steven Seagal... just check my signature. Once again, Robert Rodriguez hires an actress to play a stripper who doesn't show her tits (Jessica Alba in this movie, Salma Hayek in From Dusk Til Dawn). Aside from "555" telephone numbers, that's one of the biggest SoD killers. The movie was also way too long and the gimmickry was starting to get dull.
On the other hand, the imagery was like something from the covers of those sleazy true crime/ detective mags. At least it was somewhat original. I also thought Carla Gugino was unbelievably hot as the parole officer who sleeps in nothing but a thong and answers the door that way, too . Who knew the mom from Spy Kids was such a piece of ass?
It says a lot about how lame movies have been over the past few years that a mixed bag like Sin City would be one of the better films. Maybe if the government refuses to allow the MPAA to harass moviegoers the studios will instead look at the crap they keep putting out and at least try something new. Yeah, and Steven Seagal will be cast opposite Julia Roberts in a remake of Norh By Northwest.

I don't go to the movies due to intollerance for morons. However i did go and see RotS, HHGTTG, and Batman Begins. Sith was easily one of the most powerful movies I've ever seen, due in no small part to Ewan McGreagor. Hitch Hikers wasn't too bad unfortunately I'm didn't enjoy it because the book and the BBC 1 series have been a part of my life since i was young. BB was meh for me. I feel it suffered from holywoods standard pick a plot and butcher it to fit a comic book theme. And Scarecrow was in my opinion a fucking awful bad guy.

Well, I saw it in the local cinema at halloween night. I never heared of the movie and I was expecting a horror movie, not a fucking boring court drama. The possession scenes themselves were cool but annoyed me at the same time (when the movie starts with "based on a true story" and the other characters are seeing stuff like demons, dramatic lightening, insects crawling away or standing clocks I was like... yeah ok whatever)Guardsman Bass wrote:Really? Movies I forgot: Four brothers and The wedding crashers. Both were pretty good

I don't see many movies in the Theater so I am adding DVDs to it as well
Liked:
Serenity - Had no problem following it and never watched more than pieces of the series.
Batman Beginnings
Team America - Did not see it until this fall. Funny movie which makes fun of everybody
A Cinderella Story - Did not see it till this fall. I sometimes like kind of sappy movies.
So-So:
Harry Potter and Goblet of Fire - Not a bad movie but not super
SWAT - saw it spring of 2005 I think. Decent action movie though not great
Bad:
Out of the Blue - Went with my Brother, Never would have chosen on my own
Assault on Precinct Thirteen - Not totally sucked but not a very good movie in general
Wanted to Watch:
Sin City
Corpses Bride

I don't go see very many newly released films in a cinema, generally about five per year, and of that I only go to films which I have a pretty good idea I'm going to like. I avoid seeing films which I think I'm not going to like.
What I saw this year was:
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
War of the Worlds
Land of the Dead
The Brothers Grimm (the only one I thought was merely okay)
Corpse Bride
King Kong
EDIT: I also saw Batman Begins and The 40-Year-Old Virgin on DVD, both of which I liked immensely.
