Mandator-Class
For my fanfic (yes, I'm working on it ...), the Mandator shows up, so I thought I'd throw together a design. I'm curious what people think of it; please, give me feedback!
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong
But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

Unless it is a Mandator-class Mark II subclass.

My thought was, the Executor needs a design lineage, and big KDY starships like the Mandator would be its predecessor, so it should look similar, but smaller.Knife wrote:A kitbash Executor?

Not too bad looking -- whats that on the belly, a large hangar area , near the aft-pointing "dagger" ?
"Of course, what would really happen is that in Game 7, with the Red Sox winning 20-0 in the 9th inning, with two outs and two strikes on the last Cubs batter, a previously unseen meteor would strike the earth, instantly and forever wiping out all life on the planet, and forever denying the Red Sox a World Series victory..."
Yes, that's a hangar.Burak Gazan wrote:Not too bad looking -- whats that on the belly, a large hangar area , near the aft-pointing "dagger" ?

Just 4 thrusters? I don't think we see that on any ship of half that size.

How many should I add, then?Alan Bolte wrote:Just 4 thrusters? I don't think we see that on any ship of half that size.

the Executor had 13 thrusters of various sizes so 6 or 7 (in total, add 2 or 3) at least, also I think the hangar area is a bit too bigSurlethe wrote:How many should I add, then?Alan Bolte wrote:Just 4 thrusters? I don't think we see that on any ship of half that size.
otherwise it's nice.

I agree, lose the "tooth" and change it up a bit; the Venetor-class looks like an ISD yet still has a feeling of being different, this just looks like a modern Executor variant.
'Ai! ai!' wailed Legolas. 'A Balrog! A Balrog is come!'
Gimli stared with wide eyes. 'Durin's Bane!' he cried, and letting his axe fall he covered his face.
'A Balrog,' muttered Gandalf. 'Now I understand.' He faltered and leaned heavily on his staff. 'What an evil fortune! And I am already weary.'

Bah. If I were to ever do a fanfic it would consist only of canon Imperial warships. I just flat out don't like EU ships of any sort. Not even EU wedges cut the mustard- too ill-defined. I'd only change my mind if they released say ... an official CD-ROM with nice RotS-quality meshes of them. Or something.

That's retarded. Then you have a distribution of 2-3 classes (not including the CW ships) to cover all the roles and business of a galactic superpower.Vympel wrote:Bah. I'm only speaking in terms of my imagination- I simply can't picture the EU warships next to those in the films. Hence idle day-dreaming about seeing some nice meshes of them.Illuminatus Primus wrote:

Agreed. The Kuati made the Mandator for system defense, didn't they? Obviously, it'll have hyperdrive, but not necessarily the top of the line one. For the most part, it'll be insystem and/or with large fleets. I see no reason why it would have large hangar complexes. Of course it would need shuttlebays and the like, and I can see a handfull of squadrons for recon, ect.... But since it's supposed to be a StarDreadnaught or a Star Battleship, why would it need such a huge hangar complex?StarWarsJunkie89 wrote:I agree w/ everyone else on that "tooth" portion of your ship. Maybe move the bridge back a bit. It looks awkward where it currently is. Also, see what happens if you make it a bit wider.
I'd ditch that part.
Aslo, why the classic SD bridge tower? IF anything, I'd slap in the type of bridge tower from a Venator or something akin to it. Perhaps a Venator like bridge towards the rear with a Acclamator like bulb further along towards the bow.
I'll give Surlethe credit, though, with having the patience to draw all the little superstructures on the dorsal hull. Yeesh.

Ultimately the number of "thrusters" is irrelevant, for two reasons:Just 4 thrusters? I don't think we see that on any ship of half that size.
1. The specific impulse attainable for each thruster is more important than the number of thrusters, so for instance, you could have two thrusters equal in power to eight thrusters of a different design.
2. The more thrusters you have, the higher your maintenance costs, but at the same time, the more failsafes you have in the event of a malfunction. Thus, the two opposing viewpoints, economy and reliability, balance each other out.
Also, do we really know that those are individual thrusters? Might they not simply be exhaust nozzles connected to one or two gigantic engines buried within the hull?
Ultimately though, anyway you slice the thruster issue, it doesn't change the fact that this is a geniunely lousy design.
