Go learn more about black holes....
John De Lancie, who played Q in 3 of the Star Trek series, is narrating a new film on black holes at the Clark Planetarium in Salt Lake City, UT. He's going to BE THERE , at the film’s Grand Opening, January 17th from 6-9. Black Hole specialist Stacy Palen from Weber State University will also be lecturing later that night. Tickets are $15, $20 for non-members. This should be a first rate night. I saw the trailer for the film today and it is absolutely phenomenal. The designers used actual relativity theories to graphically recreate the black holes. Skywalker Ranch is doing the sound FX. The whole thing is amazing. Check out Clark’s website below for more info:

This is unsolicited advertising, which is really bad juju around here.GammaCiari wrote:John De Lancie, who played Q in 3 of the Star Trek series, is narrating a new film on black holes at the Clark Planetarium in Salt Lake City, UT. No it's technically not advertising...
Keeping with the high brow nature of the website:
Advertising is a paid, mass media message with an identified sponsor
This is a recommendation to go see something REALLY cool dealing with the new advances in black hole science in the last year. If you want to pull go ahead. If you have a calendar or news events, which I didn't see, please post it there. We are trying to get the word out. Thanks

GammaCiari, you realize that many people on this forum don't even live in the United States, and the fraction that does don't live close enough to Salt Lake City to make the trip worthwhile (such as little ol' me), and only some of those availible will even care (because they're Q fans or black-hole fans).

Sorry thought of this a few minutes ago...
Can someone who is a little more well versed in things like logic and debate point out how I'm wrong with this one... Seriously, I wanna learn...
You're telling us that in order to attend this event we must pay money, which both according to the definition of "Advertising" that you and I have provided, means you are peddling something. You are both "getting the word out" and "asking for our money". Yup, this be advertising, arrrrr.....

I think it shows a proper respect for the rules and a stern but measured response to someone new who didn't read the rules. It displays a respect for the community and its standards by those that have spent a bit of time here.Frank Hipper wrote:Wow, sure is a bunch of moderatin' coming from non-mods here.

Jesus fucking Christ, people regularly encourage others to watch a particular documentary or TV show here, and we don't slap them down for advertising.
If there were a policy decision to be made, you morons should have notified a mod or at least a senator rather than taking it upon yourselves to drive away a new member by dog-piling on him for nothing.

Sounds awesome actually, if I were attending Weber State I would definately go, but I'm not, so bother. I wonder if this film will ever come out on DVD, if it does, I'd definitely be on the lookout for it.GammaCiari wrote:John De Lancie, who played Q in 3 of the Star Trek series, is narrating a new film on black holes at the Clark Planetarium in Salt Lake City, UT. To wit, is there any proper form for event announcements and such? I found this to be an interesting prospect and, though impossible for me to attend, I would certainly like to know about events like this on the off chance that they are accessable to me. How should those announcments be made to avoid violating the no advertising rule?

If it's something significant that concerns a topic of general interest to a large part of the board population, it isn't at all out of line to post a topic about such an event happening. The staff does not regard this particular thread as being anywhere near violating the advertising rule for that reason (because on this board, black holes are a topic of general interest), whereas stuff like "Come look at my cool website about <insert topic>" would run afoul of it.
However, if you're not absolutely sure about a thread, ask a moderator if it's okay to post it to avoid shitfests like this thread turned into.
