Ah, so you used to put Earthquake on your Blastoise, too? Nothing shocks an opponent more than a facefull of 6.0 to their Electabuzz.

Yes, that's a nasty surprise. So is breeding something with a Hidden Power that's super-effective against what it's weak to. HP Ice on a Pikachu, etc.

Yeah, I'll admit I still play. I got Yellow back when that came out, and I have Gold, Silver, and Crystal. It's a decent RPG that requires strategy, and I agree with putting the weird attacks on them. Espeon with Bite, Alakazam with Seismic Toss, Mew with Softboiled...yeah, fun is good.

The game was innovative and new. The merchandizing killed it.

Incidentally, I own one of those Digimon handhelds that you shake. Got it four years ago. It's silver. When I was living in Japan, at school, you could walk up to anyone in the grade, tap them on the shoulder, and have a little duel. Kinda neat.

Oh, and pokemon is just a bastardization of digimon, and not worthy of my respect.
Pokémon as a game predates Digimon by about two years.

Digimon sprouted from Tamagotchi, Pokémon was based on three things -

1. The Japanese console RPG
2. The inherent fixation on collecting things which gave birth to things like bubblegum/cigarette/baseball cards and sticker albums in the west
3. The Japanese love of multifarious options and things to twiddle in computer games.

Actually, for all it's alleged simplicity, it actually has the most complicated formula for levelling up in any console RPG. Ever.

Why?
2 reasons:

1. It's free anime. It may be childish, but it's still anime.

2. Fuck you.
But its bad anime. Hell Pokemon has done more to hurt anime in the US anyway then anything else.

It has, however, brought several innovations to the console hardware scene.

Voice recognition on the N64 as a means of interaction with a game? Tat'll be a Pokémon game then.

Wireless connection of handhelds via mobile phone? Oh look, Pokémon again...

It might have been a giant cash cow, but it was also a clever testbed for new and interesting things, to get people to actually BUY them so the makers could see how they worked in the wild..

Yeah, getting new people to actually watch anime is terrible. Face it, no one who wasn't already not gonna watch anime was turned off by pokemon. Pokemon just gets the young interested, so when they're older they'll still be interested.

And the people who believe that already believed anime was either like Looney Tunes or all hentai. So they form misconceptions, it happens.

Yeah, but it means they probably won't advance to good anime.

And what I'm saying is that those people never WOULD advance to good anime, even if Pokemon never existed.

And I think the main obstacle in their way is stuck up anime fans who try to distance themselves as much as possible. Those kids have a way in, and many people who claim to be anime fans are blocking that way in.

DON'T try to distance everything else from pokemon, just make sure they know that the other stuff is better.

Who said I was? I was just saying that people would probably not watch better anime if they had the belief that all of it was like pokemon.

Right, and I said that people who believe that all anime is like pokemon are no less likely to watch anime now than they were before they heard of pokemon, since they had different preconceptions before.

While they have the same likelihood, the preconceptions are the same. I just said that if they had the same view, that means no different preconceptions.

BTW, have any of the Pokemon players here seen some of the new Pokemon they're bringing out in Ruby/Sapphire?

http://www.pokemasters.net/modules.php? ... 210&page=1

That's a list of all the ones you can find in both versions. The best part is that the vast majority of them are all new, including a cool-looking female Psychic, Six new Dragons(Latios and Latias, One Grass/Dragon set, and the other is the first of two Dratini/Larvatar-like Slow-Evolving, but powerful Pokemon. The other is Steel/Psychic), a Sumo-like Fighter, a Psychic Fighter, and a lot more Ghosts.

The only R/B/Y Pokemon returning are:

Abra/Kadabra/Alakazam
Goldeen/Seaking
Magikarp/Gyarados
Geodude/Graveller/Golem
Zubat/Golbat/Crobat
Tentacool/Tentacruel
Machop/Machoke/Machamp
Magnamite/Magneton
Voltorb/Electrode
Oddish/Gloom/Vilplume/Bellossom
Doduo/Dodrio
Grimer/Muk
Koffing/Wheezing
Sandshrew/Sandslash
Igglybuff/Jigglypuff/Wigglytuff
Staryu/Starmie
Vulpix/Ninetails
Pichu/Pikachu/Raichu(Oh don't look so suprised!)
Psyduck/Golduck(Okay, now you can look suprised!)
Pinsir
Ryhorn/Rydon
Horsea/Seadra/Kingdra

While G/S/C Pokemon are much rarer:
Azurill/Marill/Azumarill (Yep, got a pre-evo added)
Slugma/Magcargo
Skarmory
Wynaut/Wobbuffet
Natu/Xatu
Girafarig
Phanpy
Donphan
Heracross
Corsola
Chinchou/Lanturn

Combined with the 135 new Pokemon, that's a total of 202 Pokemon in Ruby and Sapphire.

Yep, we miss out on both sets of Starters, Scyther(Crap!), Eevee and family(DOUBLE Crap!), Dratini, Mareep, Houndoom, Larvitar, the Hitmons, Mew, MewTwo, Celebi(Ru/Sa has it's own versions of them two), The Five Legendary Birds, and the Legendary Cats/Dogs(Has two massive Poke'-Gods, one per game, who figure into the storyline, and KICK-ASS Dragon).

Oddly enough though, they have the images and information for all 386 Pokemon, even the ones you can't get in Ru/Sa. So there may still be hope.
