Powerful Songs

Post by CarsonPalmer »

What songs, in your opinion, have a deep emotional impact?
Here are some of mine
Paint It Black by the Rolling Stones, just because of the tragic feel to it
The Sound of Silence-Simon and Garfunkel, always relevant, and strikes a chord with me
Love the Ones You're With-Not quite sure why this one is on here, but it just touches me whenever I hear it, especially the opening
Up Around the Bend and Who'll Stop the Rain-CCR, You can just feel the emotion in these songs
American Pie-Don Mclean-Just reaches out and pulls you in. I can't stop listening to this song
Only the Good Die Young-Billy Joel
Glory Days-Bruce Springsteen
Sloop John B-This song always strikes a chord with me, and not about vacations. It reminds me of Summer Practice for football.
On a side note, Cat's Cradle is so sad that it brings me to near tears every time I hear it. I can't stand to listen to it. It's just too good.

Believe it or not, Linkin Park's "In the End".

You have no idea how many times it's come up within our circle...

John Adams - On the Transmigration of Souls
Sergei Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto's 2 and 3
Claude Debussey - La Cathédrale engloutie (from book 1 of preludes)
Nebojsa Jovan Zivkovic - Tales from the Center of the Earth
David Macbride - Percussion Concerto (One Revolution)
The Easystar Allstars - Us and Them
Several of the albums by Godspeed you! Black Emperor. I chose not to list individual tracks, simply because they tend to flow together.
Music can name the un-nameable and communicate with the unknowable.

I always loved From A Distance, i was a kid when it came out and i've always loved that song. Also, my favorite song ever in history is Stephen Bishop's Something's Telling Me It Might Be You.

What? What of it? :P

"Layla" by Eric Clapton is probably about the best rock song ever, and part of that is certainly due to its treatment of unrecquited love.

Flames, by Vast...

...Partially because they are my favourite band, partially because it's a really good song, and partially because that was what was playing when I lost my virginity, so it's now kind of ingrained in my soul as a rather important song.

Bad Habit, by The Dresden Dolls...

...Because when you first hear it, it sounds so lighthearted, but then you realize, it's talking about suicidal and self-destructive tendencies.

Winter in my Heart, by Vast...

...Because I'm a huge Ren Faire geek, and it perfectly describes how I feel during the winter when the Faire is shut down.

Endless Skies, VNV Nation...

...Honestly, I don't know, but it always makes me stop whatever I'm doing for a while.

Adagio for Strings, by Samuel Barber. When not played by a high school orchestra ...
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

now, unveiling my band geekism: (actually corps geekism I guess)

Loss, as performed by Blast!

Basically all of Santa Clara Vanguard's 1989 show, Phantom of the Opera. Especially the end though. That pretty much defines power, if you're going by un-amped loudness :P

1980 Spirit of Atlanta, finals night. I saw it once, at the 2005 DCI Classic Countdown, and I need to get a video of it!

Echos of my Scream - Fear Factory

I guess From Autumn to Ashes has a couple songs that hit emotional notes as well.

Champagne High by Sister Hazel.
Photograph and Far Away by Nickelback.
Right Here and It's Been A While by Staind.
Superman by John Williams (fuck you, you know it's awesome ;))
The Touch by Stan Bush (since it accompanied the most badass scene in a movie ever)
The Parting Glass, as rendered by Shaun Davey for Waking Ned Devine

I could probably list a bunch of others if I thought about it more, but that's a decent off-the-top-of-my-head list.
-Ryan McClure-
Scaper - Browncoat - Warsie (semi-movie purist) - Colonial - TNG/DS9-era Trekker - Hero || BOTM - Maniac || Antireligious naturalist

Lord Pounder wrote:Metallica - Fade to Black
One of my all-time favorite songs. "Death greets me warm, now I will just say good-bye." Followed by a tear-jerking guitar solo. Awesome.

Also, I have to say Libre by Tristania; the "beauty and the beast" style of vocals makes for a very emotional sounding song. Best part: "Every bullet hole in our holy town is an orifice for me to rape." Talk about looking on the bright side of things.

What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong, the best vocal song ever recorded by man, period. Every once of my hope for humanity is contained within this song.
Beethoven 9th, a piece written by a depressed, near suicidal deaf composer, that somehow ended up being exalting, exilihrating and joyful.

And for the less deeply inclined
Zombie by The Cranberries
Disarm by Smashing Pumpkins
Man and Wife, the Latter (Damaged Goods) by Desaparicidos
Disintigration by The Cure
Love Song by The Cure
Without You I'm Nothing by Placebo featuring David Bowie
Teeth Like God's Shoeshine by Modest Mouse
Muddy Hymnal by Iron and Wine
Jezebel by Iron and Wine
Passing Afternoon by Iron and Wine
Iris by Goo Goo Dolls
Older Chests by Damien Rice
Volcano by Damien Rice
Eyes on Me by Faye Wong
The Piano Song by Clarissa's Wierd
All Apologies and Smiles, Yours Truly, Ugly Valentine by Clarissa's Wierd
The Calender Hung Itself by Bright Eyes (I used to sing this to my ex, so its kinda special)
Wind by Akeboshi
And with my primary winamp list exhausted, I am gonna let you all mull them over for a bit.[/i]
A teenage girl is just a teenage boy who can get laid.

Wagner's suites always had the most emotional impact on me. The main theme from Tristan and Isoulde and The Gotterdamerung (Siefried's Funeral March) specifically. Also, The middle part of Toccata and Fugue in D-minor by Bach(a little after 3 minutes into it).

Samuel Barber: Agnus Dei (Choral version of Adagio for Strings)

There's other songs that I can listen to all day, but Agnus Dei just works on so many levels. It even kicked the Ode to Joy out the window.
According to wikipedia, "the Mohorovičić discontinuity is the boundary between the Earth's crust and the mantle."
According to Starbound, it's a problem solvable with enough combat drugs to turn you into the Incredible Hulk.
