The High Command of the Rebellion would have gave Luke anything he wanted. Being able to boast a Jedi among their ranks was a big propoganda victory. The rebellion wanted to emulate the OR. Having loyal Jedi, one of the main symbols of the Republic, would be a major victory in restoring the Republic.

Given that Luke was single handedly responsible for firing the torpedoes that killed millions, perhaps billions, of Imperial personnel, plus an Imperial project that must have taken the resources of at least a moon to build, I would expect the Rebels would give him whatever he wanted. What I was surprised at was his immediate acceptance as Red Five, leader of 2 flight, after exactly zero hours of combat missions except a few minutes in a gun turret. Unless I've missed something in the novelisation this seems a bit far fetched, considering that if I remember correctly he was placed above Wedge and others who have many missions under their belt, plus actual training ( wel actually not so sure Wedge did, he just stole a Z-95 an killed that bounty hunter I think, but the others would have presumably).
What exactly did Lando do to make General anyway?

IIRC, at the Battle of Tanaab, he managed to eliminate a marauding pirate fleet single-handedly with a bit of inginuity and fancy flying. What exactly did Lando do to make General anyway?

^ Biggs didn't have time to do that, they only met each other moments before flying. More likely, Luke just exhibited superior flying skills during the battle. It was Red Leader who assigned Wedge and Biggs to Luke, not the Rebel command, so it must have been a merit thing.

This is the guy they want to use to win over "young people?" Are they completely daft? I'd rather vote for a pile of shit than a Jesus freak social regressive.
Here's hoping that his political career goes down in flames and, hopefully, a hilarious gay sex scandal. -Tanasinn

My blog, please check out and comment! http://decepticylon.blogspot.comThe other operative was "Mici". And I thought I was the only person who had ever read that book.Solauren wrote:One example that comes to mind is him, leia, some throw-away female character and the droids succesfully breaking into the most secure facility in the empire, stealing a new experiement ship under heavy guard, and taking off (ref Star Wars: World of Fire, comic novel)
You know what else? They give luka a new X-Wing after he leaves one on Bespin! He's flying it from Tattooine to Dagobah, and from there to the fleet in ROTJ.
Shit like this is why I'm kind of glad it isn't legal to go around punching people in the crotch. You'd be able to track my movement from orbit from the sheer mass of idiots I'd leave lying on the ground clutching their privates in my wake. -- Mr. Coffee

Re: How did the Rebel Command react to Luke?
I think you underestimate Han's bravery and competence - as already stated, his actions at Yavin and Hoth speak for themselves - and how desperate the Alliance was. Let's be entirely blunt, Yavin was an absolute fluke in which a squadron of pilots long in individual brilliance but short in teamwork were taken apart by weaker but more disciplined Imperial fighters. In the end, the Alliance should only have got one shot off - Luke's only occurred because of the external intervention of Solo. So getting a hotshot pilot onboard with a fast smuggler ship is a benefit, especially when he shows he can get the job done. Same deal with Lando - the man's clearly a capable administrator, and knows his way around a spacecraft. When you probably don't have that many men adequately trained for command, and your military forces are a hodgepodge of different races and their equipment who spurn traditional military discipline in favour of individual performance, having men with plenty of charisma under their belt in command is probably a good thing.dworkin wrote:The next scene is aboard Home One with Han in a critical role and people accepting Luke just breezing in and saying 'I'll come too'.
OK it's a space opera and these guys are the heroes. Still.
I love the smell of September in the morning. Once we got off at Richmond, walked up to the 'G, and there was no game on. Not one footballer in sight. But that cut grass smell, spring rain...it smelt like victory.

The Jedi ALWAYS had a lot of freelancing liberty in Republic forces. With people like Bail Organa in charge, why would that change? Something along the lines of - "You want to control the will of the Force? Might as well order the planets to orbit differently while you're at it".
"Peace on Earth and goodwill towards men? We are the United States Goverment - we don't DO that sort of thing!" - Sneakers. Best. Quote. EVER.

Two months?
And somehow I don't think Bail Organa had word one in ESB about Luke going to Dagoba.
