SH3 player ranks
I've been playing SH3 lately, and I stuck with a campaign long enough to reach mid 1940. I've been on 60%+ realism the whole time, and I've sunk almost a dozen destroyers, four planes and more than 200,000t of mercantile shipping.
I haven't got a promotion.
Almost all the face officers on my boat outrank me.
Is this normal?
Also, the realism options don't seem to describe themselves properly. I've turned off 'gods eye view' but I still get random ships appearing on the map outside visual range without recieving radio reports. Turning off the 'information gathering assistance' doesn't seem to do anything.

Lets say it this way, I'm sorry, but last time I touched the renown/medal system was 1 month into my purchase of the game. If you wish, I'll dig up Sheps mod for the renown and possibly ranks modification. If you are still playing the game stock I'd suggest it as a basic change, and since you appear to like realisim, possibly Real Uboat modifier.Stark wrote:It doesn't seem to cause any problems, so I don't really care - it's just nuts that I got the KC with gold everything in nine months and I'm still my original rank. Is the game supposed to throw medals at you for destroying warships?
SH3 commander is also another program you might appreciate. The latter pair of mods I have mentioned are both available on subsim.com forums.

I'll admit right off the bat, I don't use any of them, let me suggest my own Must Have mod list.Stark wrote:Yeah, I just found the mod section for SH3 on subsim.com. All the nice realism mods! I was getting tired of sinking corvettes in daylight gunnery duels...
First, the generic mod enabler JSGME.
Then the Full Vulnerability Mod, this edits your ship recognition files to include colored blocks showing vulnerable spots. This is esspecially usful when not auto aiming.
I also suggest the MilitaryMod graphics, a texture pack for military vessals.
FreeCam(I forgot the full name) is a camera editing mod that lets you set field of view, very usful for pictures.
Ali sky mod and the V4.1 Atmosphereic and sound effects mod is perfect.
Also, I'm pretty sure its only found in the forums, Pascals graphical updates are amazing, completly redone subs, enemy models, etc.
Some other cute mods are replacement loading screens, a better torpedo texture and other cute things.
Also, I think Shep has his medal mod (renown) uploaded somewhere in the forums.

You can find a large comprehensive list of mods here.
Personally, I use Improved U-Boat 1.02 which I'm quite pleased with aside from the waves getting a little too large in my opinion.
I believe turning off "gods eye view" refers to ships being displayed while using the TDC though I could be wrong. I haven't playing it below 91% difficulty in a long time now.
As for problems with your rank not improving, do you return to port properly after missions? I mean, when you hit escape to return, is the actual portname displayed as the option for returning to base?

That what happens when you exit the patrol the moment you fulfil the objective. Not only do you miss out on the coming home spoils, but you get extra renown upon returning to base. Returning to base means being in the same sector such as the base. You'll know when this happens because even my PC takes a bigass pause to load it.Chardok wrote:I know when I hit return to base, it just says "Return to base" I don't recall seeing a port name. I get medals, but no promotions. Of course, I've only done 5 patrols, too...

I just did the first mission for a 1940 start to the campaign with 2nd Flotilla out of Lorein. Got 16.5k on the first 3 day patrol. Including a RN destroyer. I pretty much rolled straight out of the harbour and ran into a shitload of trouble of the south west coast of Britain... Though it was worth it.
