Problem with WMV Files

Post by McC »

I've been having this problem lately playing WMV files in both of my video applications (WMP9 and Winamp, running on Win 2K). In Media Player, the file plays, but there's no video. In Winamp, the file simply refuses to play. This doesn't apply to all WMVs. I downloaded AVIcodec to examine what codecs were being used, and evidently the problem only occurs on WMVs encoded with "WMV2 = Windows Media Video V8" which is listed as unsupported. I've tried twice to download the IT codec packs from Microsoft, but with the same message in AVIcodec.

I've been able to view these files in the past -- this problem has only occurred within the last few weeks or so. Any ideas?

Have you tried the Theorica DivX Codec Pack? It worked for me. :)

Not sure what DivX has to do with WMV. DivX is an AVI codec.

Most cases like this it's usually an error from an update or something that is causing files to be misread, or that's how it seemed when I had this problem. WMP reinstalled itself though after I rebooted, like it deyected some install flaw.
