I would hope that you don't write off religion because of your bad experiences. Religion, even Christianity, is resolvable, with a bit of fudging perhaps, with a modern and rational position. If you do wish to be an atheist it is no skin off my nose but I hope it is a choice between the whole of religion, rather than its wierder sides.

Sorry to spoil the mood, but I don't think we're quite the "winning team" quite yet.

We're certainly weathering the storm of American Christian-fundamentalism well, but until it's politically marginalized or defeated, it's still a battle.

For example, they still hold the highest office in the world, although if history has at all an impartial eye to such things, they're doing a fucking terrible job so far.

The majority of my family thinks Bush is one of the top three Presidents of all time. Fundies will think he is God's gift to America no matter what he does. They call it "Absolute Morality" which Christians, and Christians alone, possess.

Good for you, it's good to know that at least one more mind has potentially gotten away from the event horizon of the thinking black hole that is faith. Depending on your position, the whole concept of religon can be considered wierd. I myself was raised Catholic, but I never took to the indoctrination since even as a child I couldn't make any logical sense of what they telling me. And even today, when I acknowledge the need for morality and possibly spirituality, the need for religion still escapes me. I can't understand how some people can worship an invisible man, or there ancestors, or a cow for that matter.

No, religion is never resolvable with a rational position, because religion is inherently irrational. This must be made clear: if an intellectually honest person is Christian, he will acknowledge the fact that Christianity is irrational; and if someone wants to be totally free of irrational beliefs, atheism is the only way to go.

I wouldn't disagree. All I meant was that you don't have to be illogical in your life and ethics to hold a religous position. I willingly understand there is no evidence for my faith, making it very much a faith but I do not consider myself an irrational person in my daily life, ethics and practice.

I've decided I am either a universalist with Christian leanings, or a "soft" atheist, or possibly a deist......but I am no more simply Christian.

If the universe does not require a Creator, then the moral teachings in the Bible do not require the miracles and supernatural events to make them important.

Since this acceptance of myself, I am truly free.

Within your beliefs, you shouldn't be illogical; outside, the only illogic you must necessarily pursue is that which rises from violating Occam's Razor. It's good to understand there is no evidence for one's faith; I'm the same way.
