Am I a Racist?
I'm a bit tired, but over the past days, I've been thinking of making this thread. Here it is.
I hate 'black' culture. I hate the vast majority of it. The fucking music - namely rap, hip-hop and rNb. The fucking bling bling shit. Their emphasis on being cool, being in gangs, fucking hoes and popping gats and snorting coke and being illiterate shitheads, degenerates, and assholes who contribute nothing to society. Their disdain for those who actually contribute to society - like how they make fun of other black people who actually work for a living and don't pose around in shit clothes. And their shit clothes. And also what my sister noticed as overcompensating - notice how shitloads of black music videos have black folks with shitloads of women, airplanes, sports cars and shit? That's because they are inferior degenerate garbage-eating people who actually deserve to be in the prison or living in the gutter if it were not for their ability to appeal to the common idiot.
I hate that crap. I don't have any problem with a black person who does not act degenerate. And I loath people who try to act 'black'. The only reason why I tolerate bits of that crap is because sometimes they come off as stupidly humorous.
So, does this make me a racist? My disdain for 'Black Culture', I mean. What say you?

ask yourself why are you hating it, is it because it's black culture or because it repecents ideals you dislike/hate (like being a criminal is cool)?
I may be an idiot, but I'm a tolerated idiot

I don't hate it because blacks do it - I hate it because it glorifies bad aspects of society, because it is degenerate. So that doesn't make me a racist? Great!

I hate all that same bullshit. I've known black people who've hated all that same bullshit. There's no reason you should be called a racist just because the sector of society that tries to glorify that bullshit is primarily black. That'd be kind of like calling someone a racist if they didn't like chinese food restraunts.

I hate 'black' culture. I hate the vast majority of it.
You're within your rights to dislike a musical style. I don't care for most hip-hop because I grew up on music with strong harmonies and instrumentals--one reason I do like such groups as The Roots, who use instrumentals. The fucking music - namely rap, hip-hop and rNb.
Because African-American popular culture is the only one which emphasizes dressing flashy and showing off your wealth. The fucking bling bling shit.
Because African-American popular culture is the only one which glamorizes drugs, sex, and living a life of hedonism. After all, everybody knows that rock and roll was all about studying hard, avoiding drugs and alcohol, volunteering in your community, and refraining from sex until marriage.Their emphasis on being cool, being in gangs, fucking hoes and popping gats and snorting coke and being illiterate shitheads, degenerates, and assholes who contribute nothing to society.
The only unique criticism here is the violence, and if you've actually seen the neighborhoods in which this culture originated, you'd understand why violence plays such a prominent part. Next you'll act surprised and dismayed that Viking literature was full of people bragging about how they killed people, too.
Having actually worked in an overwhelmingly black school in an overwhelmingly black neighborhood and worked and interacted with these kids every day (something I sincerely doubt you've ever done), I'm going to call this one overblown. Most of them want to be successful in life. Most of them also consider school a complete waste of time, and considering the education they get, they're mostly right--these kids know full well the education they're getting is bullshit. There's a lot of complicated reasons why black kids in the ghetto get shortchanged in school far worse than their white (or black) counterparts in the suburbs, but if you've got some idea that it's all their fault they're coming out of school not knowing enough to make it in college or the job market, or just dropping out early, then you're living in some kind of fantasyland.Their disdain for those who actually contribute to society - like how they make fun of other black people who actually work for a living and don't pose around in shit clothes.
Again, you're entitled to dislike a style. And their shit clothes.
Yeah, what about it? I must have missed the Motley Crue videos where the boys donate their concert procedes to the United Way and take vows of chastity. It's selling a fantasy. And also what my sister noticed as overcompensating - notice how shitloads of black music videos have black folks with shitloads of women, airplanes, sports cars and shit?
You forgot mud people, coons, darkies, monkeys, jigaboos, antique farm equipment, and niggers. That's because they are inferior degenerate garbage-eating people who actually deserve to be in the prison or living in the gutter if it were not for their ability to appeal to the common idiot.
I like black people as long as they act exactly like me!I hate that crap. I don't have any problem with a black person who does not act degenerate. And I loath people who try to act 'black'.
You "tolerate" it? Just what in the fuck do you think you could do if you didn't "tolerate" it? I'll tell you what: tomorrow, I'll announce to my class that ShroomMan777 merely "tolerates" their pop culture, and at any time, he may stop tolerating it. All of West Philadelphia will be quaking in its boots. The only reason why I tolerate bits of that crap is because sometimes they come off as stupidly humorous.
You're "tolerating" it. What a shithead.
In the strictest sense, no, since you're not tying your hypocritical, bigoted, uninformed, idiotic, and generally repugnant views to skin color. You're a raving ethnocentric bigot and a moron who can't distinguish popular tripe sold to teenagers and ACTUAL black culture, you use the worst kind of commercial garbage rap to base your impressions of millions of people, you seem to believe your personal dislike of a musical and clothing style is a legitimate indictment of a culture, and you decline to make a reasoned criticism of African-American popular culture in favor of some bug-eyed rant, but you're not actually racist. Congratulations, I guess. So, does this make me a racist? My disdain for 'Black Culture', I mean. What say you?
Really, you sound like some whining little shitbox who's pissed off the black kids are getting more pussy than you. Really, you should relax--everybody's getting more pussy than you. Just get used to it.

Another thing as RedImperator said,That's because they are inferior degenerate garbage-eating people who actually deserve to be in the prison or living in the gutter if it were not for their ability to appeal to the common idiot.
. Would you be more comfortable if they acted and dressed like you? Why should they have to conform to your culture, because it makes you more comfortable if they are like you? You may not be a racist but you're treading the edge of it. Don't forget, that a lot of people uses "culture" to disguise their racism. I hate it too.
At least, I hate what It's become. It used to be cool. Now, I haven't listened to my local rap station for any notable length of time years, because I can't stand all the Krunk and wannabe playa bullshit they constantly play! Living in the "Dirty South" sucks sometimes, and this is why.
The only "Krunk"-style artist I can stand listening to is Ludacris, for the sole reason that when it comes to lyrics, the brother can string words together with a skill that surpasses every other Krunk rapper combined.

It seems that you're more of an individual classist. I also hold a distaste for rap music and their videos as well, but I would not over-generalize its association with black people since I also see many whites, latino, and a couple of asian people banging their woofers away to rap.
Some of the best people I've ever known and associated with are black. I've ran with them in track, drank with them, and etc. Some listen to rap, and like to mimic popular "Black Culture", but some don't. However, I do enjoy their company nonetheless because they can act with class when the situation calls for it.

The problem is that, at the moment, a lot of black people have this problem of confusing Street Culture with Black Cultrue.
Let's put it this way:Another thing as RedImperator said,. Would you be more comfortable if they acted and dressed like you? Why should they have to conform to your culture, because it makes you more comfortable if they are like you? You may not be a racist but you're treading the edge of it. Through most of my childhood, I was accused of "Acting White" just for speaking correctly(Ironically, I don't do that as much anymore).
Blacks have always prided ourselves on unity. On sticking up for each other because no one else would. I actually have no problem with that.
The problem is when unity becomes replaced with Conformity. When you deviate from what is considered the norms for Black Culture, too many people see it as a rejection of being Black period. Then come the comparisons to certain Nabisco cookies(Blacks are not alone in this. The terms Banana/Twinkie and Apple have also been used with Asians and Native Americans respectively).
And frankly, mainstream Hip-Hop culture, as it stands now, has got to change, or it's got to go.

You know what I hate more than black artists trying to come off as the mother of all badasses in the street? White artists trying to come off as the mother of all badasses in the street.
This aspect of "black culture" is retarding a lot of lives that could otherwise have become perfectly good with families and friends still involved, and no drugs or violence. Sadly, it would seem, as with all kids, that such fantasies are more appealing than getting a good education, leading to a good job and then raising a family. Being able to get millions off a rap track, throw it at bling and a car and fuck as many women who get off on guys with more momey than sense is far more preferential to having something ground in reality.
I do recall that many are actively opposing this concept though and helping the less privileged area kids see these dreams as practically unachieveable (or downright wrong in the whole "get rich or die trying route") and helping them not become society's rejects. RI is certainly a part of that group of people.

Shroom, I wonder -- do you have the same reaction to Caucasians, Latinos and Asians who seem to imitate this? (Regardless of whatever nationality they I identify with.)
This one sounds common... I wonder why? (Hint: A stab in my own direction. )I like black people as long as they act exactly like me!
Incidentally, this one is what I think really makes "black Republicans" such a political hot topic concept. The problem is when unity becomes replaced with Conformity. What the hell is black culture anyways? It seems to me like one of those dumbass phrases that don't really mean anything. Black culture? That would imply that all blacks represented by it, which basically encompasses viewpoints and attitudes so wide that the term is rendered useless. As many have pointed out, the reprehensible ideas carried by popular rap are not really solely constituent of black culture. So then what is it?

Amusingly, in an argument against 'gangsta' culture on another board, I pointed out that Bill Cosby is against such activities as well, despite some asstard trying to point out statistics that most black people feel more comfortable when expressing themselves in such fashion. Nope your are not and this is coming from someone who is also African-American. I also hate this "Black Culture" also, I hate the music videos that glorify violence, drugs and the non-education. I hate the fact that these people don't do anything to get an education. I dont like the fact that when a mayor is doing anything to help them like ridding SE Washington of a dilipidated shopping center and giving them a world class shopping center, they whine and complain it's a conspiracy of the white man to "Rid us Niggers and put white people in our town". I also hate the rappers who do nothing but leech hard earned money from working people and live in thair mansions while others languish.Am I a Racist?

That's what I think, too. Black culture should properly be called street culture. It's just that the streets are largely black, so we think of it as a racial thing.Seriously, "black culture" doesn't exist, anymore than white, yellow, or peach-coloured.

I think RedImperator said everything I was thinking while reading your post, and then some. And far more eloquently than I would have.
What you were ranting against, most of which I also dislike, which you called 'black culture', I would have called 'Gangsta culture'.
There is such a thing as black culture in America (I'm asuming your referring to this cultural phenomenon in the US; there's my ethnocentrisim kicking in ), and it's people who identify strongly with and promote there African roots.
Gangsta culture doesn't do this in the least. It only happens to be that most people identified with Gangsta culture are black, but this doesn't make it the black culture. There are Latino gangsta's, as well as White and Asian one's.

The reason for this is that at one time, the USA was touted as being the worlds melting pot, where race and ethnic lines were to be blurred into one unified mainstream culture. The problem is that WASP culture is the mainstream culture and we expect everyone else to conform to it rather than us blending in with them. With whites fighting to keep there cultural identity intact and force it onto other minority groups, many people from minority groups tried just as hard to keep there own cultural roots from being destroyed and it became a fight to save ones identity. Now ridgid cultural lines have been drawn and anyone on anyside that tries to cross or blend them is called a traitor. I myself am white, but because I have an intrest in other world cultures, I'm derided by some of my friends, especially being called a Rice-King or said to have yellow fever due to my great intrest in Asian cultures, and a friend of mine in high school fell for a Latina, and was called a 'bean-eater' on more than one occasion.SAMAS wrote:The problem is when unity becomes replaced with Conformity. To say there's no such thing as black culture because culture isn't related to biology is disingenuous at best. Of course skin color has nothing to do with culture. That doesn't mean there isn't also an ethnic group in the United States colloquially called "black" which DOES have a distinct ethnic subculture (a subculture which has very little to do with what ShroomMan was ranting and raving about, by the way).

That is obvious, I agree. It's also obvious that it's dangerous to be sloppy in this regard, because doing so brings a debator a pair of quote marks away from making a real asshole of himself. As you yourself pointed out earlier, most the negative hallmarks of said "black" culture are not unique to it, which ties to my point.RedImperator wrote:To say there's no such thing as black culture because culture isn't related to biology is disingenuous at best. That doesn't mean there isn't also an ethnic group in the United States colloquially called "black" which DOES have a distinct ethnic subculture (a subculture which has very little to do with what ShroomMan was ranting and raving about, by the way).

If he said "gangsta culture" instead of "black culture", he would have been more on the mark, and less vulnerable to accusations of racism. To be honest, even the term "black culture" is intrinsically racist, because it presumes that there is some connection between black skin colour and some particular set of cultural values.

"Gangsta Culture" I think might be more appropriate term.
But I do know black people who dress somewhat in the "Gangsta" fashion, but aren't degenerate scumbags, they are honest, hard working professionals, sometimes doing an important, but thankless job.
And the majority of people I've heard listening to "Gangsta Rap" or Rap in general, are white.
I don't personally like rap. All I've heard is "killin' niggas, killin' cops, smackin' hoes, and beatin' bitches." I respect other people to who this is their favorite kind of music in the wide world, and likewise I expect they'll understand if I feel the name is missing a "C" at the beginning.
And as I said, most of my friends who are black, I don't really ever see listening to it.

Let me introduce you to Viktor:
Viktor is, bluntly, a rather big geek. He lives for playing MMORPGs, has an anime-mecha fetish, has a thing for wearing black fishnet shirts, has a pierced nose, lip, and other areas, dresses distinctly gothy, uses proper english, and listens to way too much Mindless Self Indulgence.
Also, he's black.
And it kind of irks me when I hear anyone assuming there's a 'black' culture.
Does this mean that there's a 'white' culture, of white christian males who like working on cars, listening to country music, and wearing polo shirts and blue-jeans?
Should we automatically assume, until proven otherwise, that any caucasian we meet belongs to that white culture?
As many others have pointed out, it's a culture of conformity, not race.
In my own opinion, it's also the commercialized representation of culture, which is the main reason I actively avoid watching TV. Here's a small hint: What you see portrayed on TV is *not* the rule, the norm, or even the slight majority.
So, as I see it, you're not racist...just gullible.
