Numbers conversions help, please.

Post by Anomie »

In the Civilization Ranking Thread and many other threads, people have calculated out power in watts and joules and convert them into equivilant chemical energy output, usually mega- and gigatonnes.

I know what watts and joules are and can do the basic watts, volts, amps conversions and such from my old highschool tech classes, but never was taught any formula for what you guys use all the time. And using google, I've only been able to find calculations and formulas that are taught in basic engineering and physics classes.

So what I'm asking you guys to help me, and everyone else on the board who doesn't have a strong science and engineering background, is to write up some of the common conversion formulas used in the calculations of this board.

Thanks.

On the attached Website, there is a page with many useful (in the context of this website/forum) scientific constants.

http://www.stardestroyer.net/Empire/Sci ... tants.html

One of 'em is the energy density of TNT, assuming a 100% efficient process:
TNT detonation = 4.2E6 J/kg
From this it's easy to convert energy into the kiloton, petaton, or whatever you want to use.

This site might be useful

Look under "energy".

I've been using http://www.savardsoftware.com/masterconverter/ for years. It's great, and it lets you add in your own custom units.
I've added antimatter reaction energy, 'ballpark' figures like a Death Star blast or Hiroshima, an FTL speed converter, lightyears-per-interval units (1 lightyear/second is 1.12e20 feet per hour!)...
