"I've been instructed by my superriors to return to our nearest port. In light of recent events," she paused to regain composure, "in light of recent events" she repeated, "we have to close this meeting. In the near future some of our associates may be interested in establishing diplomatic relations. They will be in touch if this is the case. In the meantime, the staff will escort you back to our docking corridor. Thank you for your patience."
The Air-Mage slightly bowed. "It was an interesting event, until your captain's unfortunate demise. I hope you will get to the bottom of this. I guess we, the nations assembled here, may have more meetings from now on. Hopefully not as eventful as this one."
As if on command, the shuttle that brought them on board, still berthed in the bay, vanished before the eyes of the Ganymede's officers.
"An escort won't be necessary," the Air-Mage said with finality and vanished along with his officers.
The Thunder immediately gained speed, intent on completing its exploration mission.

Shearwater, The Silver Flame
OOC: That is one squadron of Guardian Class Fighters or 5 force points of fighters. And I just checked if this attacking ship is listed on your OOB and is not a bomber then there is nothing you have which I could beat.:D

“All ships, fire”

Deadly energy shot from the Guardian Class fighters, the huge bolts detonating on the approaching ship, everybody in the command room held there breath, would the fighter be able to destroy the onrushing invader or should Shearwater only line of defence fail.

The outside edge of Gaian space
The probe exited super-luminal space and began to deploy its sensor masts to listen to the radiations of the system it now sat just outside the oort cloud of. A veritable barrage of signals were detected all coming from inside the system and except for the usual radiations of stars and gas giants most of the signals were obviously artifical and meaningful in some way.
The caretaker program reviewed the data input and compared them to its action/response system order, then it began to activate its more complex AI functions. The fully functional AI system was normally dormant on a probe, to prevent wear and damage to the systems over the 500 year expected useful lifespan of the device, a simple caretaker program making the observations studies and reports was normally enough as every possible aspect of a new star system was explored and cataloged.

The probe awoke. It took hours to bring itself to its current minimal level of awareness. Probe reviewed the data, there was no mistaking the signals were from non-diem sources and they bore a very close system of encoding to the transmission devices discovered in the ruins found long ago meaning that either these were the near-mythical humanoids desecendants or that these people had been in contact with such and shared technology. After taking precautions against the contact being hostile (such as destroying course and homeworld locations and deploying FTL capible devices to report if the probe is attacked) Probe turned its power system to full output and began broadcasting what it hoped would be interpreted as location data and greetings.

GND Solaris, Lightrider-class Destroyer, patrolling the outer perimeter of Gaian Space...

"Commander Highwater." came a voice from the front of the command deck. "Commander, we're detecting superluminal transit entering the system." said a professional and apparently vaguely disinterested sensors operator, manning her station.

"Send me the flight path and estimated mass of the contact." she replies. "Have Shipmind decode that signal. Engage primary engines for an intercept course. Cut our drives three light minutes out, and coast in."

It was surely an alien scoutship given the size and estimated mass on the Solaris's sensors. Highwater wanted as close an undetected inspection as possible...

At her commands, the sleek destroyer turned on it's axis, rotating and facing the new contact, firing her drives in a hard braking maneuver before streaking off to intercept.

Probe studied the ship that had jumped in just outside of its expanding "Very Large Array" network. The VLA network, made up of hundreds of micro-probes, served as a large scale scanning and recieving dish.
Data came in quickly on the approaching ship. Though it was sending out no signals and almost zero inadvertant radiation, the outgassing was spectrographed for its content and the engines output during braking was observed giving efficiency estimates and a solid number on the ships mass. The results showed that it had a high power/mass ratio and along with the powerful battlescreens and radiation shielding made probe tentatively classify it as a ship designed for combat.
Probe had to make a very quick decision. Reviewing all the current data, it decided to shut down its engines/main powersystem and reduce its radiation screening signifigantly to allow more detailed scanning of itself. Secondary power systems came on-line and the probe, as well as every component of the VLA system, began sending a low powered signal so that the warship would know the exact distance and location of every component.
Feverishly the AI tried to construct a translation matrix to allow communication. Unfortunatly nearly 87% of in-system transmissions were coded in such a way that even with a large ammount of processing power devoted to them, they couldn't be broken down. (military transmissions that are encoded and impossible to read)

[Note: The following meeting lasted a few hours. This is a condensed version]

A few weeks ago

Gathered around the conference table were the members of a General Assembly committee, various military officers, and some of the Princep’s advisors. The Princeps himself arrived last, his imposing presence quieting the room and commandeering everyone’s attention. “Alright then, let’s get down to business. I’ve read the preliminary briefing, and trust that so have the rest of you.” Princeps Marcus rarely bothered with pleasantries, instead preferring to get straight to the point.

A young Human, the markings on her uniform indicating that she held a respectable position in the Spacy, activated a small handheld device as the Princeps took his seat. “As you all know,” Marcus continued, “Project Argus has been going on for a few decades. Most of you have been briefed on it at some point or another. The officer here will present the entirety of the findings, and then we can decide on what should be done with this information.”

A holographic display appeared showing the local star cluster. “There area lot of signals coming from everywhere in the cluster. Most them are diffuse and jumbled together, due to the vast distances between them and us. We can’t decipher anything from them, other than the fact that there is a lot of FTL travel and communications going on throughout. Closest to us, however, we have managed to detect five distinct entities.” She pointed to the three dots indicating the Republic, “We are here. There is a fairly wide gulf between us and any other civilizations. If anyone is alive in there, they are so small that their signals get drowned-out by everything coming from the rest of the Cluster.”

The imaged zoomed-in on the right of the cluster, three areas of space lit-up, data began to scroll, areas were flagged, the image started to rotate slowly, and more holograms appeared showing even more data. “This is the second area of space were we detected signals indicating the presence of a FTL capable civilization. There is a lot of traffic coming from here. Over time, we have managed to make-out three distinct entities, designated X-2, X-3, and X-5. All signals are given to a computer program to run through the Central Database looking for possible matches. X-2 matches a nation from the Great Wars, mostly in the drives their using, and the location is more or less the same as back then. The signals from X-3 partially match a nation that should be located on the other side of the cluster. We’re guessing that they migrated for some reason or another. X-5 is a complete unknown.

The image panned to the left, a new area was highlighted. “This is X-4. The comms traffic we are getting from there is... strange. We didn't think so at first, but upon looking at the database, we got matches to certain kinds of biological signals. Upon further study, we came to the conclusion that they are transmitting neural signals over their communications network. The reason why can’t be known for certain at this time, but the best theory is that there is a sort of hive mind that uses FTL comms to keep cohesion over the vast distances of space. Most of the other comms traffic seems to be quite normal. No other matches to anything in the database.”

The image moved again to the left, stopping near the edge of the cluster. “This is the same area of space that H. Mekidaris came from. That’s why when Project Argus started, it was the first place we looked. The signals coming from there are definitely a negative match to anything on the old Human records reguarding the 'Great Enemy' that they were escaping when they arrived to the Republic, except for the general location. Some of you probably know about the ancient listening post that was recovered several years ago. Analysis of it reveals that it was made for the specific purpose of keeping tabs on the old Human territories. Deployed some time after they arrived, it records an entity closely matching the Great Enemy. Eventually something else enters the picture, and proceeds to engage the Great Enemy in fierce combat. The storage space on the post ran out as they were being demolished by the new entity, but how things ended isn’t hard to guess, considering that the new entity is the same thing currently occupying that area of space. The Human records do allude to them having a close ally occupying the same area of space they did. However, the entity doesn’t have even a passing resemblance to these records, or anything else in our database for that matter.”

The display switched to being mostly data, with the few illustrations being graphs and the like. The officer looked straight at the assembled, “Threat assessments: X-5 is not particularly impressive, they’re hard to distinguish from the glare of the others. Power rated anywhere between .25 and .75. X-3 and X-4 are both rated at around 1. X-2 is clearly the most powerful thing in the vicinity, it’s been rated anywhere between 1.5 and 3. As a threat to us, it is not a particularly large one, considering that it has closer neighbors to deal with. Finally, X-1 is somewhat hard to judge. The information we got from the probe would suggest that by now they’d have a rating of 2, however the signals coming from there now are more along the lines of a 1. We are not sure how to resolve this contradiction, the most obvious answer would be that near the end of the war with the Great Enemy, they lost the initiative big time, but still emerged victorious. So basically, we have as our immediate neighbors three powers of about our strength, and one at around half. Then somewhat further off, there is a very large entity of anywhere between 50% and 200% stronger than us.

The information from the briefing was further discussed at length. Questions made and answered, concerns raised, theories proposed, and many things wildly speculated upon. The conclusions reached after much debating were rather simple. Establish standard diplomatic contact with X-3, X-4, and X-5. X-2 would be left alone, best not to wake sleeping giants. Finally, X-1 would be approached cautiously. Humans, and any relevant files regarding their anscestors and their past before migrating into the Republic, would be included with the diplomatic team.

The General Assembly would be immediately informed in closed session. As soon as contact occurs, the public would be informed of all developments. The committee present at the meeting used the powers given by the General Assembly to approve the commencement of contact with foreign entities. Any further decisions would be done publicly by the Assembly as a whole.

Shearwater

The Stropworth Wanderer was a mass-produced aetherclipper. Such vessels were designed for three traits: Ease of construction, volume of supply storage, and most importantly for the stockholders who their explorations would enrich, cost effectiveness. In essence, the ships were constructed of sheets of ceramic/steel composite held together with honest to god bolts. Air pressure was maintained thanks to industrial thaumaturgy, which moulded the ceramic sheets and steel bolts to tight enough tolerances that no air could escape from between them. The Stropworth Wanderer couldn't even enter atmosphere without decellerating down to low speeds and pouring significant portions of her crisis engine's output into abjuration charms to repel the frictive heat of re-entry.

A corporate aetherclipper was far, far away from a warship, and as such, was poorly equipped to deal with any threat more dire than angry natives armed with chemical combustion weapons. Even primitive atomics posed a threat to a vessel such as this.

The impact of modern antiship weapons, such as those carried on the fighters of the Silver Flame's defense force, was devastating. Bolts exploded from the hull in a hundred places as ceramisteel plates buckled and collapsed. Twitching, screaming corpses burst out like pus from the newly-opened wounds, dying horrifically as their bodies entered vaccum.

The Stropworth Wanderer's shattered remains struck the atmosphere at an angle far to oblique for it's ruined bulk to accept. Flame lept as an abjuration flickered briefly as some surviving section of the vessel's difference engine attempted to activate emergency containment despite the ship's failing systems and damaged crisis engine. The attempt was a failure, as the metaclockwork slipped a gear and descended into a few brief milliseconds of total machine insanity before it annihilated itself in a wash of disintigrating steel and escaping puissance.

A comet swept across Shearwater's sky, leaving a tail of burning debris many kilometers long. It would impact somewhere in the ocean, sending a cloud of steam high into the atmosphere.

Briefly illuminating the Pfhor emissary ship with their main drives, the five LPGN cruisers came to a relative stop beside it, some three hundred kilometres from the Ganymede. Fingers of coherance reached out, scanning for any possible threat, and shields remained raised.

The last of the vessels had detached from the Ganymede docking corridor and Commander Callen returned to Operations. With the diplomats safetly off the vessel it felt as though part of the weight had been lifted off her shoulders. A small and momentary reprieve from the stresses invoked by the previous few hour's events, which included the deaths of both her commanding officer and her Captain.

The regret was beginning to sink in. Was this a test that she had failed? What was the correct solution? What was she meant to do? Everyone else must have known the answer to that, and they must have hated her for not knowing. In her mind she showed weakness infront of the foreign delegations and infront of her crew. Promotion into a command position was the last thing she deserved, in her mind.

"Commander," the Ensign didn't know Callen very well, few of them did, but they didn't hate her. She was efficient, fair and there was a wisdom about her that many respected. No one blamed her for the Captain's death, this would lie solely on a lonely and frightened crewman locked within the Ganymede's brig.
"We have a situation. Five more Pfhor ships at range 300. Active energy fields, looks like shielding systems."

After everything that happened, after all that could have possibly gone wrong that day, now this? Callen could hear Jonas' voice, a memory from a long time ago, "I know it's hard but we've got to stay tough. The galaxy isn't going to wait for us to be ready." It was an intelligence op that was on the brink of collapse, everything that could have gone wrong went wrong and the Ganymede was nearly lost. The Ganymede had faced some hard times in its past, this was no different.

Callen steadied her resolve, she had her orders.
"Comms, send a message to all ships in the region, appologise for the event and reitterate our sincere interest in whatever seems appripriate. Helm, vertical rotation minus 50. Navigation, set a course for Thalysene and commence FTL sequence. Tactical, charge primary deflectors and interceptors, let's hope we don't need them."

The message was broadcast, along with a reitteration in Concord's sincere interest in further communication.

"Sequence locked in Commander, FTL jump in thirty seconds."

As the warship continued to approach, slowing with hard braking but still coming, Probe finally made a breakthrough with the translation matrix. With only archeological data and a few unencrypted transmissions to work from, Probe hoped that this message would be understood. Creating a short and simple message, Probe sent it using thirty of the most likely to be understood language codings. The message was simply: "Greetings. Will relocate on request"
Now only waiting for a reply was possible. Without weapons or proper battlescreens, probe would not survive being fired on long enough to escape, but if things did go wrong atleast some of the jump capible messenger capsules would get away with warning.

The ship sensed the ships of the Khar aliens closing in on the Concord vessel and sent the information into the Air-Mage's mind and that of the bridge crew. It also felt the Concord vessel preparing its defense mechanisms. Minds at thoughts raced through the telepathic and magical links at inhuman speeds.
<<Should we try to assist?>> the XO asked him.
<<I think they'll manage on their own.>> The Air-Mage answered. Might just be me, but these Khar don't seem stupid enough to start a war over two dead persons not even of their species.>>
The message was received quickly thereafter. After a quick consultation, a reply was sent by the ship.
"Ganymede, the Falau'un would be interested in further communication, hopefully in a more peaceful way. Your ambassadors will be welcome." A data stream was added with appropriate ways of communication.
Quickly thereafter, the Thunder's hull configured itself to matte-black and sheathed itself in its stealth mode before it's main Netherspace node's magic manipulated the Universe and it left the system as invisible and unobstrusive as possible.

GND Solaris, Lightrider-class Destroyer, approaching the outskirts of the system...

The heavy destroyer rolled on it's axis, spinning with it's thrusters firing and decellerating with her main engines briefly pulsing to slow the craft. Commander Highwater waited on Shipmind's translation of this probe's signals, reading the preliminary interperetation of the signals.

"It's a contact probe, Commander." replied the sensors officer, reading it. "What should we do?"

"Fashion a response, and prepare to signal Fleet. Say that... we wish to know the probe's origin, and wish to establish diplomatic relations." she began. Not a bad response. If the probe or it's originators were hostile of course, such an introduction couldn't possibly hurt relations...

The Captain had been on his ship for a while. Something was going on, and it was scary. Yasi onboard the Concord vessel couldn't possibly touch him kilometers away in his own ship. Could they? Hopefully not. So he had brought his comrades to a confusing and very disorganized retreat into their shuttle.

Sitting in the bridge, he was in his element.

But even had he the Karmic Spirit of Admiral Yetne, this problem was undefeatable.

Five Pfhor Ships.

1 Khar Destroyer.

"All Shields up! Weapons free but under command lock! Vaccum Readiness Protocol Red to obeyed at all times! Get this goddamn flying rowboat under way and prepare to fire off a burst message to Monau-Ra! Get us moving at 0.40 and reverse to fly inertially until we are at main cannon range!"

The Khar Vessel's bulky rectangular visage rotated and fired engines. Careful observers would note fifteen guns turning, including one turret that dominated the front half of the vessel and seemed impossibly large for its required internal structure compared to the tiny Destroyer.

Invisible planes of force erected themselves around the vessel, followed by energy fields. The Khar vessel rotated, flying 'backwards', its massive front prow pointed towards the diplomatic meeting's former place- the retreating Ganymede, the Pfhor, and other ships.

Some hours had passed since the alien ship had stopped disturbingly close to Probe. The most reciently recieved message had obviously not been a demand to leave so Probe had began transmitting raw language data and basic mathmatic information to the war vessel. Pretty much useless to them in the short time they had so far, but they had figured out the idea and had done the same in return. With this mass of information Probe was able to work much faster than expected on the translation matrix, now it was reasonably certain it would create more complex messages without being mis-understood.
To break the silence, Probe sent the following message over the same low powered signal the previous message had been recieved on.
"*I am Probe, a creation of the People of Diem.
*My function in this circumstance is diplomatic.
*Origins cannot be divluged, the destruction of original location and course data was destroyed as a precaution when it was first discovered that there was a space-faring alien presence in the system.
*Conversation is welcome, though translation may be difficult for a time. Forgive any misunderstandings."

Perdido Street Station,
New Crobuzon, Bas-Lag

"This."

A thousand eyes stared unblinking, shocked.

"Is."

The word echoed from brick walls to buttressed ceiling, nearly a hundred meters above..

"An."

Flecks of spittle glinted in a beam of sunlight, dancing downwards to settle gently on the cravat of a well-dressed young lord.

"OUTRAGE!"

A meaty fist slammed into the hardwood podium, causing a small explosion of sweat beads from between the broad, corpulent fingers.

"An aethership of the Empire, destroyed- and by some barbarian tribe squatting, squatting I say, upon the ruins of some long-gone civilization! The Stropworth Wanderer was shot down on approach for landing without so much as a warning. Not since the time of Suroch and the Pirate Wars has Crobuzon been subject to such abject humiliation."

Thadeus van der Grimnebulin, Mayor of New Crobuzon and, by extension, overlord of the Empire which that august city ruled, cut an impressive figure. His jowled, ruddy face was home to two tiny, glinting, brutal eyes, possessed of the sort of malevolent intelligence one usually only detects in the features of a wild boar. Entire swaths of the finest velvet, silk, and linen enfolded his body in layers of waistcoats, jackets, and shirts, the cost of any one could have fed a large family for years. A sopping, smouldering, chewed-up stub of a cigar attempted to escape one corner of his vast maw.

“The worlds of the Kreshay constellation all lie in the grasp of this barbarian empire- one can only wonder how many worlds these savages have despoiled! It is not at all doubtful, the nature of Kreshite society. What sort of people would ignore full-spectrum thaumaturgic communication on every band and dimension, and then shoot down a peaceful exploration ship? Monsters, that’s who. Pirates. Scourges on the star-lanes, and likely heretics who live without the guiding light of St. Jabbar.”

Applause, especially from the cluster of well-dressed parliamentarians who represented the Salácus Street Northwest Company whose vessel the Wanderer had been, began to roll through the chamber.

“This being the case, I move for the immediate dispatch of a task force to take the Kreshites to heel for their crimes. We will not allow an act of war such as this to go unpunished! I call this gross assemblage to authorize full mobilization of the Iron Fleet for immediate action against this enemy, not just of Crobuzon but of all civilization!”

“Stop this nonsense!”

A voice rang out, high and clear.

“What proof do you have of this? Can you back up this proclamation?”

Mutters and angry groans filled the room in response to Lord M. Derherzerog Croix’s latest radicalism. The young liberal’s Now We Can See party preached pacifism.

“Perhaps there is more to this than meets the eye, mmm? The Salácus Street Northwest Company would benefit greatly from the assistance of the Navy, but at the expense of the other taxpayers, and in particular, in the expense of the other licensed exploration and exploitation companies?”

The saturnine young man stood on his bench. Despite the breach in protocol, Grimnebulin remained silent on his podium, allowing the lad to speak.

“After all, this mobilization would put the full weight of Crobuzon behind Salácus Street Northwest. What evidence that this infraction even merits such a move, for the sake of a single corporate aetherclipper? A move which would deny any support for the companies of men such as you, Lord Sauders, or you, Lady Ju nii Crais, should you face any problems in your expansions?”

A small chorus of “Ayes!” began to erupt, and not just from the small group of radicals surrounding M.D. Croix. Other voices were raised, from the factions supported by the other exploration companies.

“Nonsense!”

The Mayor’s blustery voice smacked into the crowd like a fist into a stomache.

“War with the Kreshites must be prosecuted immediately. This Empire can not survive if it is not respected. Fourty percent of the population doesn’t speak ragamoll. Fourty percent was savagely loyal to the Witchocracy only half a century ago. What binds the old Teshite worlds and cities to New Crobuzon? I’ll tell you. It’s our pure, unbridled might. They see that in addition to our clear cultural superiority, we hold enough power that secession is impossible to the point of absurdity. Lose that, and we lose this Empire. Crobuzon will stand strong, so long as I hold this podium.”

His eyes narrowed deep in their fleshy folds.

“And no pack of doddering neobarbarians is going to get in my way.”

The voting was firmly in Grimnebulin’s favour. Mobilization would start immediately. Those light-years away who called themselves the Silver Flame would not know it yet, but the might of Crobuzon was coming. Once more, war would rend the stars.

The Silver Flame fleet burst in to the system, there weapons powered up, there shields at full strength. There sensors detected the wreckage at once and moments later the hail from the planet came.

A small hologram appeared on the arm of the fleet commander’s chair and began to speak “This is Marshal-General Coldrock here, the oncoming ship has been destroyed by our fighter screen, we would request you help however in the salvage operation to try and determine why the ship was here.”

“Granted Marshal-General I will send out exploratory craft at once” The Commander replied and gave the orders to his launch control and fleet coordination officers.

Hours latter as the news came to Coldrock, the Fleet commander could find no evidence of any weaponry on board the ship and that the hull would have had trouble standing up to a single fighter. Coldrock kept running the Commanders words over in his head “It is the opinion of my experts that this craft was not military in origin but likely some kind of exploration craft.” What had he done, a civilian ship and he had ordered it blown up, but why then had they ignored hails, he knew it did not matter. It could not have posed a threat to Sheawater, the half exploded shell was now on its way back to the Lesser Library maybe some thing more would be found. He reached over and took another gulp from the bottle.

The fleet command was in up raw, the Silver Flame navy (which until this time had been mostly deployed exploring the north east rim) was being redeployed each system would be covered by multiple warships all because of the Shearwater incident. The reasons were twofold explained Admiral Gel to the assembled Admiralty, first (and potentially most worry he thought to him self) was how the alien vessel had be able to enter a habituated Silver Flame system with out being detected on approach and second that fool Coldrock had blown up an unarmed civilian vessel, what action would there government take in retaliation. He went on to tell how the Lab boys were ripping the ship apart, trying to find anything at all that might help the situation but as yet had found nothing. In fact they could not even work out the basic principle the ship used to propel its self through space.

“So we are agreed, the fleet will be re-deployed, The Silver Flame will be put on high alert, has the High Seeker given us control of the situation yet Lieutenant” he said speaking to the man standing at a computer screen.

“Yes sir, the order has just come through, “the navy is ordered to use any and all resources at its disposal to protect the silver flames sovereign worlds and space” there is more sir but that’s the important bit”

“Very good, when my grandfather was Lord-High Admiral, it took the then high seeker two turns to give him the ships he needed to deal with a few pirates. This will help us greatly”.

The meeting dragged on a while longer but nothing new was discussed the admirals left for the respective commands. Only now was the news of what happed transmitted out over the ORC network and the people were not happy.

Aboard the Antipathy, the cruiser's captain raised his eyes to the pulsing sensor repeater, tracking the movement of the Khar vessel. Optical sensors steadied and zoomed to reveal the dim outlines of gun turrets swivelling to regard the Pfhor task force. He hissed into his helmet mic.

"Order the Khrve to withdraw to the Kuiper belt and execute a jump back to Gd'nar. Signal the task force to load missile tubes and go to status red." At an alcove nearby, Comms raised his head:

"Signal from Obsat-14, stationary at our retranslation point. Commissariat encrypt." The captain blinked.

"On screen." A block of green text scrolled into view on then nearest holodisplay.

"Antipathy-Actual, all vessels. Secure weapons and withdraw to translation point."

"...sequence in three, two, one," with a momentary flash the Ganymede was gone.
Glimmervoid wrote:The meeting dragged on a while longer but nothing new was discussed the admirals left for the respective commands. Only know was the news of what happed transmitted out over the ORC network and the people were not happy.
Later, a message arrived, addressed to the Marshal-General. The message was plain text and not of Silver Flame origin. Exactly how the ship's computer was able to interpret it was anyone's guess.

"They are quite powerful and likely very angry. I'd start making friends if I were you." The following was a sequence of numbers, stellar coordinates, pointing to a location just outside Silver Flame territory.

The Emperor simply sat, resplendant in his multicolored, flowing robes.

"My most honored Lord, we must mobilize immediately. The report. You've already read it. You know what it said. Neo-Revalth activity in a Patrolled System. The Commander of the destroyer has reputedly made contact with multiple alien Nevaryutibiz, in addition to those Sinful Titans."

The Emperor sighed. "I understand this. Resurgent Revalthiz is a huge threat. However, we cannot risk damaging Imperial Power at this time. Although we wax, we cannot hold back the floodtides. Did you know that privately, Clan Nirtnal has sought my support for a war against the Ryefrau and Utostanaq? This is simply impossible, Minister."

The Minister's turn to sigh was now. "Lord... the Revalth. Our most holy writings! The Revalth! They seek to become as Gods, to enslave the universe itself and usurp the place of the Chosen Race of the Gods! To not fight them when they fight us would be..." he trailed off, aware of how close he came to being executed on the spot.

The Emperor slammed his fist into the throne, angry. "I cannot allow a mobilization now. The Clan Peace has endured for four thousand years of rule by my mother and her ancestors, and cannot be risked!"

"Perhaps, Lord, we could start to slowly marshal forces from the colonies and begin evacuating key persons away from them to better fortify the Clanworlds and Monau-Ra?"

"That proposition is interesting. It shall be done. Also, drop off a note to Ambassador Rakeq'Yartam. Tell him that if he ever carries out what he sought my support for, the Wrath of Heaven shall fall upon his Clanworld, and none shall survive. This is my will."

“What did this message mean, was it a trap to try to capture him, but why him, he was decidedly out of the loop since the incident, so it could not be that then, but why him.” Coldrocks mind was in up raw, if this message was genuine he could save the Silver Flame, he could get his life back, ever since It happened he was not thinking clearly the drink was not helping matters either. Could he make a decision on this by him self, could he risk telling anybody, no he decided he would commander a frigate and go to the coordinates, he would talk to who ever sent it and if it proved important he would create an ORC uplink to the fleet command and tell them what was happening.

He pulled him self out of bed, his hair was a mess, totally flattened and tangled along the entire length of his body, stepping in to the shower Coldrock continued to think, how would he get a ship, even if the captain did not laugh in his face he would not be able to get out system with out the rest of the fleet chancing after him. The Marshal-General realised that he did not even know if he still had the security clearance to board a Navy vessel any more, this was getting harder by the second.

It turned out that he did, in fact the captain of the vessel seemed even egger to get him out system. Maybe the fleet command felt that the system would be safer with out him in it, of course they could not officially reassign him because of this, there would be public up raw were ever he was sent so maybe the captains of the fleet had been ordered to take him away if he asked. Regardless of the reason he was now on his way to the coordinates in the message and he still did not know who or what he would find there.

The Legion Class Frigate Egbert dropped out of ORC in the empty system its shields fully active but weapons not powered up. Now was the time Coldrock would find why he had received the message and why he had been asked here.

GND Solaris, Lightrider-class Destroyer, looming ominously by the probe...

"Diem? What in Planet is that?" Highwater asks.

"Apparently, a neighboring nation. We've had no contact, but there are some records on hand regarding them. They're technolgoically and culturally backwards compared to us..." said the Shipmind Technician as he worked hands over the station. Holograph screens popped up, displaying what data was known.

"Begin recording, code in the same cypher sent to us, and reply. Diem Probe. You are now in the space of the Gaian Compact. We mean no hostile actions, and in the interests of interstellar relations, we welcome our neighbors." Highwater speaks to the air. His fingers waved over his station, sending the message at the end.

"Gaian ship, I thank you for your greeting. Long have my creators used devices such as myself to search the stars and until now all we had discovered were ruins of worlds and star systems destroyed by powerful weaponry long before.
"Am I correct in assuming that you are the race called humans (genetic information and visuals of remains sent via subchannel)? Our studies of these ruins have shown that your kind honor your dead, so as a sign of good will from my people to yours I offer that if you wish we are willing to return to your people all remains recovered during our archelogical excavations.
I hope though that you forgive caution and understand our reasons for it, as of yet our only information on the galaxy at large come from the remains of war and we do not wish to bring oblivion upon ourselves."

The Republic dispatched one Guardian-class cruiser with a diplomatic team to each of the four foreign entities it had decided to contact. Sending in Warriors had been the original plan, but a destroyer doesn't give a friendly and peaceful first impression. Thirty more cruisers (20 Guardians and 10 Alliances), accompanied by five destroyers, set-out to explore and catalogue the space between the Republic and the nearby powers.

The diplomatic ships used erratic courses that made little sense if they wanted to get to their destinations with any semblance of expediency. Speed was not their objective though. The Mekidar had no illusions that if anybody had bothered to look, they would know of them. However, the Republic was not about to let anyone get their position without working for it. So their ships took on crazy loops and turns as they approached their destinations at angles that would suggest a point of origin other than Mekidar space.

Inside Collective space, several light-hours away from the nearest system, an infestimably small hole opened on the fabric of space-time. This hole rapidly widened until the MRS-117 Shield passed through into real-space, then it closed as swiftly as it appeared. The Shield could have come-in much closer to the system, but protocol was to come out very far away and glide in at c-fractional speeds with shields up, comms transmitting on all spectrums, and the FTL drive kept ready to go.

The transmission was simple repeating pattern, its purpose to say "Hellooooo, anybody home? If there is anybody, I'm here in plain sight and totally not hiding." in as a universal a language as possible. The broadcast would periodically switch to basic greetings in various universal languages preserved in the Central Database, a greeting in the language the Humans that became Homo Mekidaris spoke before being assimilated into the Republic, and what the researchers back home hoped were broken words in the language of the Human's old ally instead of corrupted data.

[Note: The ship is approaching from the 'south'. Beowulf can decide which system]

Many lighyears away from Diem space, MKS-150 Strength dropped into real-space. The was no surprise at the lack of signs indicating the nearby presence of civilization. It was expeced that finding X-5 would take some effort. The ship sent a tightbeam FTL tansmission to the Republic, informing them of the situation. Strength then engaged active scanning in the hopes of finding its destination.

[Note: The ship is near the lower right corner, and below the plane, of Stormin's map]

Tou system
several light-minutes from Suigin

A squadron of cloaked RF-7As make a pass over the Shield, giving it a careful once over. A heavy cruiser jumps into existance nearby the ship.

"Unknown vessel, this is the Sleipnir, you have entered Collective Protected space. Halt, and state your purpose."

The Egbert's sensors swept over a nearby asteroid, dead in space. Rock, iron deposits, metallic mass, docking instructions...

Another message arrived on the system containing detailed instructions on how to dock with a metallic recess within the asteroid.

"The door is open. This will require privacy."
