Songs about your hometown - Sheffield Shanty

Post by Plekhanov »

Monkey Swallows the Universe’s wonderful Sheffield Shanty which you can legally download here has recently been getting a bit of airplay on BBC 6 music.

Are there any songs out there about your home town or locality?

Fog on the Tyne by Paul Gascoigne is probably about as close as it gets to us. Unless Ross Noble sings something, then we might be able to claim a real song.

There's a wonderful song by Perry Como called Seattle. It apparently was somewhat of a hit about 40 years.

There's a song by The Weakerthans called One Great City.

It's actually quite depressing.

"I want to be a part of it...New York, New York." Ol' Blue Eyes did our city porud with this song. Also prominently featured as the only song I'm aware of sung by the Kurgan in Highlander.

And that is one of the truly weird and screwy scenes in that movie. :)
