I not only do the bulk of my roleplay at an online game where permanent death is fairly easy to come by, I also managed to get sucked in and run it. In theory it's great, especially with the World of Darkness setting we use where the emphasis is supposed to be on big drama and actions having consequences and all, but it does come with its own unique set of problems. There are some players who want a setting where they can really die, and there are some who say they want that but actually want a setting where anybody but them can really die, and massive whining and cheating sometimes ensues. Overall the good outweighs the bad for me though, I've been playing there for eleven years now and working for seven.
I won't spam you guys with the details of the game, but feel free to PM me if you're looking for that sort of thing.

So far, it looks like about 1 out of 3 MMO players would prefer a game with permadeath. That's a lot more than I was expecting. Maybe someone really could make a successful title that incorporated it. It wouldn't appeal to 2 out of 3 MMO players, but the remaining third might sign up in droves, as it would be the only one of its kind.
