What Is An Academic Subject That You Are Learned In?

Post by Fire Fly »

If you had to name one field in which you specialize in or know very well, what would it be? And when I mean learned, I don't mean the run of the mill off hand knowledge stuff, I mean you must have been taught the subject material in an academic manner and be capable of making a detailed argument in that subject that which you specialize in. I'm curious as to what is the academic make up of SD.net is. And do please explain what you selected.

Myself, for example, would be biology (genetics and biochemistry).

Is this really appropriate for the SLAM forum? This seems frivolous enough to belong in OT or even Testing, unless you need people of varying expertise for a question or something.

You forgot a "none" section. I'm a high-school student. I can't say I'm academically learned in any of those, yet.

I know quite a bit about music, so I went with that. Really, though, I don't know enough about any of these subjects to say I'm learned in them. My knowledge of music, in addition, is pretty specialized. It's incredibly piano-centric.

Computer science major. I've a ways to go yet, though, but I pick it up extremely quickly.

Biology, mainly microbiology. I notice many computing students have some experience in physics or the like too. Was the other way round with me, I did computing before I did my degree. Working with computers in science is mandatory now, so a good skill to have.

Environmental Science would be the only subject I'm truly academically trained in - it's a bit multi-disciplinary, certainly the next few months will consist of me learning large chunks of heat transfer equations so I can describe steam/ice interactions in Icelandic subglacial fumaroles, where as last year I was learning about anoxic conditions produced by massive oceanic igneous plateau eruptions.

Nothing yet. I'm a first year computer science student (and I just might switch to chemistry or economics within a half a year).

I plan on going on to graduate school to specialize in mathematics, so I'll vote that.
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

I'm a bio major in college now, halfway done with getting my B.S. at the moment. I'm also minoring in history, and, if I can test out of all my remaining lib. ed. requirements, I might be able to double major in history. Not sure what my speciality would be for either, at the moment. However, I'd definitely go into a biology career. Probably as a primatologist, mammalogist, herpetologist, or parasitologist.

The closest I can claim is CS. And even that's faulty - I can PROGRAM, and have had education in the practicalities of it(ideas, picking up new languages, etc). My theory, however, is shit. When I start a few uni courses, that will obviously change.

At this point I don't think I can claim anything since I've forgotten at least 90% of what I've learned. My formal education was in Computer Science specializing in hardware design & control systems but I'll be damned if I can remember anything past a first semester level. Also took physics & engineering classes as part of my required course distribution but I can't remember much of that either.

Generalist. As it is I know a little bit about a ton of subjects, but haven't bothered making a dedication towards any one particular field. Though I do tend to know more about computers and law than, say, engineering and physics.

I intend on studying history in depth in College, and have geared my current studies in that direction, so I suppose I could vote that.
