Magic Cards = Rape

Post by defanatic »

I was told this by a fundie. What the fuck? Does anyone know of any cases of rape directly attributed to Magic Cards, Warhammer, D&D, or any other supernatural games? Or murder?

Fundies like to associate strategy games like D&D to occultism, and occultism to all manner of evil things. There's no logical correlation.

No, I don't. But who cares?

It's not up to us to prove it never happened - He's the retard making the claim, it's up to him to prove it.

The only possible way magic cards could equal rape is someone playing strip-magic the gathering, or using them as a weapon to knock someone out.

And in that case, there incidental to the occurance.

What about some weird combination of mind slaver, coupon and gift? You sent the prise as a sexual favour and then mind slave them.

You could actually make a case for the first one; point out there is a relatively high incidence of pedophilia in the Catholic priesthood. Then, when he claims Catholics aren't really Christian, respond with, "Well, D&D players who are rapists aren't really D&D players."
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

Did you really have to pursue further?

A fundamentalist as considered in this day and age is a fantatic who only cares of their personal little world, who cares what the real world has to say on subjects.

They are likely to claim too much sunlight causes rape/murder/sin if they were told it in a way in accordance to their beliefs.

Actually, the accusation of dandruff is what really carries weight.

My dandruff started at about the same time as my "fundie" period, and I believe that this was no coincidence.

And as we all know, anecdotal evidence trumps systematic investigation every day. And personal experience and belief trumps even anecdotal evidence.

But you can actually make a case for all of those.
Paedophilia: Catholic priests and all that.
Necrophilia: Holy Ghosts flying around inseminating helpless young virgins (that's even worse. It's reverse necrophilia!)
Dandruff: Uhh... Well, all those crazy hats the priests wear can't be good for their scalps.

Slightly off topic, but I was watching A&E and they were talking about a bunch of boys that were accused of killing one of kids' sister and A&E in their dramatic voices says, "They were all deeply immersed into DARK fantasy games like Final Fantasy."

Anyway, It's a fundie, and fundies are known for their rabidly tossing anything they don't like, don't understand, or if they just feel likethrowing something into the "It's evil and if you do it you'll go to hell" barrel. One of my acquantances (who is somewhat of a faithful christian) got into the game and he told us his mother-in-law yelled at him about how it's a satanic game blah blah blah. It has to do with the whole idea of summoning a demonic creature, it's just some people can't manage to realize that they're just some cards (And they worry about video gamers  ).

As for Strip Magic... that is an interesting idea.

Yeah, and? If you believe that something intangible exists out there, that's your problem. But if you try to tell me that said intangible thing regularly interfaces with the real world, such as that your god healed a little girl via magic, I feel pretty confident in stating that you suck at determining cause and effect. So asinine conclusions like 'card games make you a rapist!' don't surprise me coming from a group that sees invisible intervention everywhere.

I've spent enough time around people who think every passing breeze is a ghost, and I'm fairly well acquainted with this problem. It isn't just relegated to the religious; X-files-type conspiracy theorists and new agers are just the latest incarnation of the human ability to assign imaginary causes to phenomena they don't understand, religion being the mother of all manifestations of this trait and folklore being the runner-up.

That's just plain dumb. What the heck is the correlation here anyways? There doesn't seem to be any evidence they're putting forth.

Fundies have never been known for providing evidence to back up their claims. So this shouldn't be of much surprise.

Whisky....Tango....Foxtrot...Over

I would seriously like to meet this person, just so I can tear whatever pathetic argument he has to shreds.

There has never been any cases where Magic Cards, D&D, or the like have ever been attributed directly to rape. I'm sure someone accused them somewhere, but I seriously doubt that claim would ever hold up in a court of law.

There were those cases several years ago where D&D players got soooooooo wrapped up in the game that they started taking it into real life and a few people got killed. Leave it to fundies to exaggerate the incident though.

See the movie "Mazes and Monsters", based on the incident. The boy in question was already mentally unstable.

Obviously, but I'm sure anyone that actually claimed that would get their balls cooked tound here in short order. Anyone that does subscribe to the irrational epistemology and reverence of faith, however, is part of the same system that produces fundies. Insane religiosity is all out faith, all out suspension of reason, it is faith at it's most extreme, applied evenly and consistently, and, dare I say it, honestly. Ironically, the fundies are the logical ultimate expression of faith.

It's the secularist believers that betray both reason and faith, they are inconsistent with their application of their epistemologies, because they know that ultimately, faith is indistinguishable from gullibility and delusion. Revere that state of mind enough and we all see what we get.
Anyway, It's a fundie, and fundies are known for their rabidly tossing anything they don't like, don't understand, or if they just feel likethrowing something into the "It's evil and if you do it you'll go to hell" barrel. Yep, see it from her point of view though, she sees it as much an attack on her faith as you'd undoubtedly see anyone making fun of deities.
