Micropreviews of Empire at War

Post by Fire Fly »

Link

In the link are a couple of websites that go to various gaming sites that give small previews of the game, since they've already gotten copies of the game to try out.

Reading some of the previews, I'm doubtful of how much change there will be, in terms of visual and maps etc. from the demo. The whole asteroid belt and nebulous gas clouds will irk me, as will the relative size of the ground maps. As one of the websites said:
Overall Star Wars: Empire at War is already the best RTS-strategy game made for the franchise but as we hinted earlier that's not saying a lot.

Worst fears realized. Oh well, my brother is buying it, not me, so I don't care. I'll likely be too busy with Galactic Civilizations II (which comes out on the same day).

All the ground-based complexity of micro-managing 8 units in C&C Generals, with a space battle system to rival that of Universal Combat!

Color me unimpressed. You'd think they'd make it so you know... you can't disable a part of a star destroyer out of line of sight. But NOOO, your turbolasers pass THROUGH them to hit the target.

Not to mention there's no point in the demo to even fight ground battles, because an airstrike wastes everything on a whole screen. Which can easilly include an army.

Also, a single speeder bike can take down thousands of stormtroopers, by zipping in, dropping a bomb, and leaving. Since they're too dumb to shoot back...

Kinda took that quote out of context didnt ya firefly?

its followed by
Still the game looks good, offers both land and space combat, has a deep and unique galactic conquest mode and from our time with the beta version is a lot of fun to play. This brief preview only gives hints about what the full game contains but our playtime was well spent. Will the final released version be as good as we hope? We will soon see as the game is due out in mid-February.
Emphasis mine.

I still think the Homeworld mod is the next best thing to sliced bread.
