I'm OK (Jack Thompson related)

Post by Davis 51 »

Gamepolitics wrote:Last year's so-called "modest proposal" by Jack Thompson sparked a firestorm of controversy that culminated in the Miami attorney filing a complaint against Penny Arcade with the Seattle Field Office of the F.B.I. (that complaint went into the circular file, by the way).

Now comes an entirely new PC game based on the Modest Propospal fiasco. Published by a team calling itself Thompsonsoft (we're pretty sure Jack isn't involved), the game is I'm O.K. - A Murder Simulator.

"I'm O.K." features SNES-style graphics and gameplay. There's even a judge who looks a little like Mario.

So who are the designers? The website says, "Consisting of 3 alcoholics and a foreign exchange student, Thompsonsoft is a new game company formed around the singular idea that Jack Thompson is the most brilliant game designer in the universe... Our first title, "I'm OK", is based on Jack's masterful design from "A Modest Video Game Proposal" and it's a murder simulator so cruel, so bloodthirsty, so horrifyingly violent that it makes Grand Theft Auto seem like Sunday Funday."

"How does one explain why, in a world overflowing with disease, war, and other horrifying realities, a man would spend 18 years crusading against video games? Easy. You say that it's the most extensive, ingenious marketing campaign for a video game in the history of MAN."

Features of "I'm O.K." include: 7 unique weapons including uzis, shotguns, rocket launchers, and a baseball bat and something called the Realistic Urine Engine (R.U.E.).

It's all tongue-in-cheek of course. Thompson's reaction will be interesting, since the game closely follows the design he laid down in his Modest Proposal. Can he complain about his own script?

Probably.
The game is available here, and I must say, it is quite fun.

Here is Jack's script.

Dammit, I'm not sure what just happened, but the link to the game stopped working. It was working earlier today (I even downloaded the game.)

If I find a good mirror, I'll post it.

How big is it? If it's 250MB or under, you can always use RapidShare to upload it. Assuming it's public domain at any rate.

The great and powerful Thompson deigned to deliver unto the unwashed masses his reaction to the game.
Fascinating, in a number of regards:

1. The creation of this "game" does not meet the terms and conditions of the Modest Proposal. Not even close; thus, no cigar.

2. Still waiting to hear from Paul Eibeler as to HIS favorite charity for the donation. Penny Arcade's nit wits can't read, obviously.

3. Fascinating, further, that Dennis McCauley, who is the freelance "columnist" who runs this site can't use his phone to call me at 305-666-4366 to interview me about my take on this. Any real journalist, despite his animus, would have done just that. So much for Mr. McCauley's "journalistic ethics," which is, of course, an oxymoron in the video game enthusiast press, such as this site.

4. Finally, the attorneys for these idiots will be contacted.

More importantly, if Dennis McCauley were really a news person, he would report the murderous rampage by Jacob Robida that stretched from New Bedford, Mass., to Arkansas over the last three days. Cop-killing games have been identified by the Mayor of New Bedford.

Now, kiddies, brace yourselves for this one. Jack Thompson

The game's not bad. Parts of it can get really frustrating though, as they'll just send wave after wave of bad guys after you in a really small area. The baseball bat is yourfriend, as it can hit multiple enemies at once. A well aimed molotov cocktail also works wonders at evening the odds.

Well, beat that. Good stuff. :D

Throwing knives are great, they're one-hit kills. If you're getting swamped on both sides, some Uzis mixed with the bat should clear you up. Master jumping over flames and the lawyers' bombs while slaughtering all who oppose you. Then piss everywhere, of course.

About Thompson's response:

1. How does it not meet the requirements of his proposal? It would be nice if he pretended that he gave a damn about the rules he laid down, and explained this.

2. I seem to recall someone actually designed a game in response to Thompson's proposal, then Thompson balked, claiming he was making a joke. If it was Eibeler who designed said game, I'm not surprised he's not trying to collect; it was a joke, right? Apparently now it's back to being a bona fide offer, or else Thompson would laugh off I'm O.K.'s maker, too.

3. He doesn't consider that maybe McCauley didn't want to bother Thompson until it was certain the game panned out. Also, it was a joke, remember? Why contact him about every gullible fool who doesn't get his amazing example of cleverness?

4. Why contact their lawyers? How does any of this damage Thompson? Nobody's trying to take anything from him that he didn't offer of his own free will. If the offer really was a joke, then why should he care if someone bought it?

He's calling the deal null and void because this is an independent group who just flashed up a 20-minute game. He was calling more for something full-fledged from an established company, as well as that it had to be marketted, distributed, and sold to the populace, which isn't the case here (as of yet - maybe they'll do a "cost of cheap disc + cost of S&H + 1 cent) deal to see if they could get him to fork over.)

Thompson's always trying to throw his legal weight around - if you so much as mention his name, he'll jump on you and try to have his way with you. He's just an attention-starved imbecilic asshole.

It wasn't Eibler, but rather a mod of GTA San Andreas. Thomspon said afterwards he doesn't want a homebrewn mod, but something directly from "the game industry" (Completely ignoring the fact that the Mod community is part of the game industry.) He claims the offer is still good, but I'm guessing he will just backpedel and claim that something doesn't meet these specifications.

OK. It does sound a bit like moving the goalposts. Of course, Thompson knows that no big company's going to take up his offer, because making games to shut up dumbasses like him is not their job, because nobody'd buy such a game, and because even if they went to the trouble, Thompson would find a reason not to pay anyway.
Thompson's always trying to throw his legal weight around - if you so much as mention his name, he'll jump on you and try to have his way with you. He's just an attention-starved imbecilic asshole.
I find myself wondering, does Thompson even practice law? Does he have his own practice, does he work for a law firm or a company's legal department? What does he do when he's not complaining about video games, or is complaining about video games to anyone with a camera actually his profession?

Dude's a fully-fledged Florida-based lawyer, though what exactly he does outside of bitching against games and such is beyond me. Last non-censorship case he handled was a divorce, according to Wikipedia, and that was back in '89. Literily, the man is an immature, delusional, tantrum-throwing brat who's more or less a laughing stock.

You know, I was thinking...what if someone with a copy of The Movies, a copy of Jack's proposal, and a copy of I'm OK combined them all and turned out a Movies-scale feature flick depicting the events as portrayed by the proposal and the game? With a good script and good choriogrophy, and with enough circulation, I bet we could get him shitting bricks!

Which is asinine. He's offering to donate $10,000 to a selected charity, whereas developing a complete stand-alone game and giving it the usual promotion would cost hundreds of thousands at the least.
