Ok it all got started as near as I can tell with sidekicks, and Harlen Ellison's "Vic & Blood" (A boy and his dog). So where is the biggest cap between the human & the animal.

Contestants

White Fang (Jack London) <Ok, Jack London always had the dogs/Wolves=supergenius, humans=Baka thing going>

Vic & Blood <Telepathic dog, whiner rapist kid>

The Dirty Pair (Mungi vs. Both Kei & Yuri)

Cowboy Bebop (Ein vs. anybody but Ed)

Tenchi (Pet=Spaceship & cat/rabbit thing, owner would be Tenchi or Royoko)

Ok, white fang, Half wolf teaches idiot kid how to survive

Vic and Blood. Telepathic Dog teams up with kid, and saves the kid's life repeatadly, while all the kid does is whine about not getting enough sex, and not getting enough food. (oh blood is the dog, vic is the boy)

Ein is a gentically engineered supera genius military dog (Corgi), with a crew of bad ass but normaly smart bounty hunters.

Munghi is a gentically engineered supercat, left in the care of to airhead secret agents.

Ones from one of Harlan Ellison's more exploitational works. Most of the rest are from Anime, and White Fang isn't Sci-Fi (Unless you count Dogs being super-intellegent.)

Come on, A Boy and his Dog was a charming family oriented story. The kid was an idiot though, he blew a chance for a hell of a lot of sex.
