Luke's Force Potential
Moderator: Vympel
Luke is at least as powerful, and likely more. Just look at the exchange between Darth Vader and Darth Sidious in TESB.

Luke probably wasn't trained to deflect blaster bolts. Obi-Wan and Yoda were probably training him specifically for his fight with Vader and the Emperor and probably left out the bits that were only good for a blast wielding foe. Perhaps they left out the Shien and Soresu forms, for instance, opting for forms like Makashii and Ataru which are better for a single, Force using opponent but shitty against a bunch of guys with guns (anyone who knows the EU better, please feel free to correct me on this if I'm wrong, I admit I have no idea what form Luke actually uses).
ROTS Vader was probably the more well rounded fighter, but Luke was trained spefically to defeat him, from two people who had taught him. It wouldn't surprise me if ROTJ Luke could beat pre-lava Vader, but I admit it wouldn't surprise me too much if the opposite happened, given how rushed Luke's training was.
As for the whole Force potential thing, well, that's an iffy topic. So few Jedi have had children, seeing as how it's forbidden, that it's hard to tell. But seeing as how Force potential has never truly been a genetic trait, I don't see why it's not possible for it to pass undilituted from generation to generation. Jacen, Jaina, and Anakin seemed to be as potentially powerful as Luke. And from what I'm hearing about the new, bug trilogy, Jacen pretty much is as powerful as Luke.

Who said the clock started ticking when they were attached to the Avenger? They (the Falcon) had the run out of Hoth, the chase to the asteroids, the stay in the asteroids, and run out and the ride along with the Avenger.Captain Cyran wrote:That doesn't make sense. Why wait those six months? You can just grab them, torture them, and still set your trap for Luke without throwing in the ridiculous middle man of Bespin.Xess wrote:So the Imperials waited 6 months before showing up at Bespin as they knew they had plenty of time to wait. They may have wanted to keep up pretenses that the search was still going on in case the Rebels decided to do something about it.Captain Cyran wrote:But Lando also said "They arrived just before you did". I would think that Fett would be able to tell where they were going before 6 months passed.
Hell, you could have a day or two just on that, if you stretch it out, you can imagine a week in that sequence.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong
But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

you guys may be forgetting that he spent his whole life visiting Obi-wan in his little hut, who knows what kind of psycho-training he went under in that time. he could have been giving him fortune cookie force tips that he applied in his later training.Manus Celer Dei wrote:LongVin wrote:Does Luke even have 6 months training to begin with?Ghost Rider wrote:Look wise it's deceptive. Anakin is better looking and demonstrates it, but when one takes into account that he had 14 plus years of training and war versus Luke's 6 months to a year crash course training from Yoda?
He had a day or two with Obi Wan before he got killed by Vader.
Then he goes to Dagobah and Yoda is training him for awhile, then Han and Leia get captured. How long were they just holding them prisoner on Cloud City? A week or two tops? I don't think they spent months there.

Good question. The out of universe explaination is that Lucas hadn't decided to have Obi-Wan casually blocking lightning in PT when he wrote the OT.playloud wrote:If Yoda was training Luke for his fight with Vader and the Emperor, why did he not teach him to block lightning?Trogdor wrote:Obi-Wan and Yoda were probably training him specifically for his fight with Vader and the Emperor...
In universe I can think of two possibilities. Obi Wan and Yoda trained Luke specifically to fight Vader and only Vader for some reason. Perhaps they didn't expect Palps to be foolish enough to give Luke a shot at them both and thought he'd figure it out by himself by the time he got to the emperor. Seeing as how Vader can't use lightning, it would fall under the "not needed" category. I'll admit that explaination is really stretching, however.
The more likely explaination is that blocking Force lightning isn't actually that hard if you've got a lightsaber. This assumes that AOTC Anakin was totally taken by surprise by Dooku's attack, but seeing as how Dooku didn't try again when Anakin came back for round two, I think it works unless some EU source contradicts me. Obi Wan and Yoda simply assumed he'd seeing the blue death bolts coming at him and use his lightsaber, never thinking he'd do something so foolish as to toss it away as he did in ROTJ.

More simply in ESB Luke had not achieved the requisite level of Force enlightenment to be able to be taught to block force lighting. Let's remember that by ROTJ he had been training on his own without Yoda for months. The novelization has Luke deflecting Palpy's lightinig on his first attempt showing just how insanely powerful he could become.Trogdor wrote:Good question. I think it just takes too long. Yoda was more concerned about Luke turning than Luke getting killed: I imagine Anakins fall made Yoda very concerned about Luke's anger and vulnerability. Perhaps if he'd taught him the lightning trick (something Anakin in AOTC didn't seem to know about, so it may take ages) Luke would have just fallen aboard the DS2.
And then got blown up by the rebels... but always in motion is the future.

I supposed this is debatable, but if Darth Sidious didn't die, perhaps the Alliance craft would not have made it to the reactor chamber?
Gah, that's probably true.. and despite the fact that Luke is unusually resistant to Sith Lightning, it does make throwing his lightsaber aside seem even more foolish than it already seemedTrogdor wrote:Obi Wan and Yoda simply assumed he'd seeing the blue death bolts coming at him and use his lightsaber, never thinking he'd do something so foolish as to toss it away as he did in ROTJ.
