You have to work your way up the ranks until you reach a certain top percentage out of all the players in the game. At that point, you start gaining glory and reputation points. If you gain enough of those, then you can get access to a special server where you can play as your Ascended character. You can leave a shell identity behind on the original server, and that's supposed to help out your ascended character somehow. The thing is, your shell basically starts over from the beginning: no troops, no naquadah, but you keep your name and get a nifty little title in red under it.

He may have bought it at first, but this one is making a good half billion a turn. I've been watching. Went from .5 billion to about 7.5 billion today in a very steady fasion.
