Quite possibly, I just want to avoid any scenario where someone shows up and says "Ok, we're here now. Let's destroy their gates...ok done."Thirdfain wrote:Wait a minute. How hard would it be to find this device? To move in massed quantities of ground troops, it'd need to be pretty big. Also, wouldn't you be able to find out pretty soon, once combat was met, which general part of the planet the enemy's steady stream of reinforcements and supplies were coming from? You'd certainly require a general bombardment of the suspected area, but I'd imagine just from tracking enemy troop movements you could narrow it down to the right province or whatever of the planet where the gate is located. You'd need to establish ground superriority, secure the planet and the receiver, deactivate or blow it up, then move on.
Only possible if you could field enough ground forces to totally overwhelm anything they could throw at you.
At least that's a scenario I envisage. I don't want to see "I put 500 points worth of cap ships in orbit and blow up your gates!" Gates will be obscured and possibly have backups. Full surface bombardment after establishing space superriority would work though, although the planet wouldn't really be worth defending after that.

Error of our ways? You shot a civilian exploration ship down! Riddled it with bullets! Sent 200 men, women, and xenians to their deaths in a volley of fire! Out of a hundred options, including just disabling the engines, you chose to blast it out of the sky!Glimmervoid wrote:.

It’s all an insidious plan by you to justify your invasion, I put it to you sir that you purposely disabled the com system on that ship and sent it to my planet with the express purpose of having it blown up.Thirdfain wrote:Error of our ways? That's patently absurd. The ship isn't even run by the Crobuzoner government, rather, it's a craft of the Salácus Street Northwest Company's newly-commissioned fleet. While Salácus Street Northwest does have a Parliamentary Letter of Authorization for the establishment of trading posts and colonies, it is not controlled in any way by the Government of the Parliamentary Empire (except, of course, through the variety of taxes it must pay.)Glimmervoid wrote:

Out of game? Yeah, I was tossing this ship at you as a sort of test. Had you let the vessel land, or had you refrained from blowing it up, you would have wound up in at least semifriendly contact with the Parliamentary Empire.
However, I was also fully prepared to have you react suddenly both to your OOC knowledge that my nation is expansionistic and the somewhat belligerent tone of my posts, and do something rash.
I gave you a small group of opportunities. You happened to chose one which could potentially turn out badly for your nation.
All that aside, in-game, you DID act rashly, and you DID shoot down a legitimate exploration vessel which held no ill wishes towards you. The comm system wasn't disabled, it's just that the crew, having decided you were civilized, was trying to contact you by thaumaturgy which you had no means to detect (except by the increasing power output of the vessel as it poured more elyctricity and puissance into it's translation devices and aethergraphs as it tried to make contact.)
Sir, you ran afoul of a cultural issue. Crobuzon is VERY new to space, having developed spaceflight less than two centuries ago. Most of it's expansion has taken place in the past hundred years. All of it's contact until this point has been with other nations which arose in territory once inhabited by the Ghosthead- in other words, nations who primarily rely on thaumaturgical means. After deciding that you were civilized, of course they thought you'd communicate via magic- the Parliamentary Empire is only passingly familiar with any other form of communications. The usage of radio was abandoned as soon as they figured you for a 'civilized' nation, as thaumaturgical communication is far superior.
BTW, I'll point out that I DID post that the ship was cutting it's acceleration and slowing down, and that the strain of it's engines was it braking.

The post was semi in character, I had already guessed that your com system was magic based and that was why we could not talk. However my empire could not know that and what I posted is the story the propaganda people came up with, should it be needed.
Also my ships did fire off weapons last they were on an intercept course before they fired on your ship. As to you decelerating, it could mean anything; I had a single squadron of fighters in system you could have been preparing for orbital bombardment for all I knew. A much more logical move would have been to alter your vector so you would miss the planet.
As to disabling its engines, this is space, ships don’ stop dead with out there engines all it would do is make it continue on at its currant velocity and possibly impact the planet (depending on a weather you had smaller side thrusters thrusters, your vector at the time and the distance from the planet you were), possibly surviving re-entry and kill people. Not the best idea, or at least that’s what the scientists told the bases commander. (Ok I just did not think of it at the time)
And you cant say this way is not more interesting, I am a minor empire there is zero chance of me becoming a large player on the galactic field any time soon so what do I have to loose (thought this did not affect choice).

Nephty's, look again at the post describing the prepared meeting chamber.
Did you think that the meeting was taking place in a room filled with liquid helium? Those would be some chilled discussions
Ultrahigh water content = humidity higher than 0% btw.

When I get around to posting (I have homework now, and can only afford to be distracted during short periods of time) I'll have someone remember to see if the guys that helped us with the Corombion Trade Dispute are still around.MRDOD wrote:Bah! I want to be popular...

This ladies and gentlemen is the ancient, and quite effective, Hekartes torture method in which the entire histories are related continously and without pause. There are rumours that an entire planetary population was driven to suicide thanks to massive speakers strategically placed around the planet and a particularly boring speaker with lots and lots of stamina. They are just rumours though.
Of course they're rumors, you fool! None who heard it would have survived! We must flee immediately- this sort of firepower is out of our league.Adrian Laguna wrote: This ladies and gentlemen is the ancient, and quite effective, Hekartes torture method in which the entire histories are related continously and without pause. Of course, none of you have heard Khar history yet. It's like Japanese history, but the names are even more complicated, change regularly as titles are bestowed that overwrite given names, and is often massively incorrect in some histories and blatantly contradicts itself often.
