"BUSH APPROVES DIPLOMA MILLS" makes for the kind of headline which will seriously piss off the "soccer mom" crowd. Those people may not give a shit if some "federal science council" is made up of Bush acolytes, but if he starts diluting the value of an American university education by using his appointees to somehow force accreditation of "universities" which teach science with no research facilities and no qualified personnel, he'll catch holy hell for it.

Well, they shouldn't we encourage him to try it? :)

Because it would cost the economy billions of dollars before the problem could be fixed?

If the value of an American education goes down precipitiously then the flood of foreign scholars who poor money and intellectual capital into the US economy will dry up.

Bush could still weasel by getting acredited universities to tack on new 'science' departments and run from there, but Mike's way is far harder to subvert than anything else; barring an outright ban on using governmental fiat to inject philosophy into science.
Very funny, Scotty. Now beam down my clothes.

To change that would be basically to say that the general field of scientists isn't qualified to decide what their positions are.
You say that as though the US government hasn't done exactly that numerous times.
Before, they could change it more easily because there hadn't been some obviously correct rule in place. Of course, that wouldn't stop them because hardly anyone in the legislature pays attention to the part of the law that isn't being pushed right now. Which indicates the sad state of affairs of our legislatures. They are wayy too busy.
