I think West Side Story and Les Misérables are just about tied. Maybe WSS is a tiny bit ahead....maybe.

If we're going for plot, Les Miserables is my favorite. If you want the coolest music and most all around zaniness, The Blues Brothers definitely tops my list.

Phantom, obvious reasons.

A Shoggoth On The Roof, because I'm a Lovecraft-whore.

Jesus Christ, Superstar: This one requires a little explanation. First off, the music is absolutely great. Secondly, practically every character is shown in a fashion that goes *widely* from the norm. Jesus is shown as an almost petulant, reactionary prick on occasion, but also as a concerned, politically conscious guy as well. Pilate is portrayed as someone who's generally concerned about the welfare of his state, and though he's kind of cruel, his decision came about more to stop the mob from getting out of hand than from personal sadistic glee. The biggest example, though, was Judas. He was shown as someone who genuinely cared about Jesus, and was deeply concerned about the welfare of his own people. In the end, he did what he honestly thought he should do to protect the lives and well being of his own people.
Gaian Paradigm: Because not all fantasy has to be childish crap.
Ephemeral Pie: Because not all role-playing has to be shallow.
My art: Because not all DA users are talentless emo twits.

The Music Man used to be a favorite, but I kind of burnt out on it.

My Fair Lady is the only musical on my list of "to buy" right now, so I guess that's my fav.

I listen to Hair the most, but my favorite individual showtune is "Dentist!" from Little Shop of Horrors.

I am not a big musical fan, but I do like Cats and Brigadoon.

I love Into the Woods and Les Miserables.

Ditto to Blues Brothers, Little Shop of Horrors and South Park.

In the same vein as Blues Brothers, I'll add O Brother, Where Art Thou?.

Little Shop, West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, Newsies. All good musicals.
By the way, I never knew about that ending to Little Shop. That sucks!!
I can't believe Audrey wanted to get eaten!! Is that how it ended in the original 1960's Jack Nicolson movie?

I've seen Les Miserables perhaps 13 times, so I think it's safe to say it's my favorite. I'm an opera fan, as my handle suggests, and Les Miz definitely has operatic sweep to it. It also features one of my all-time favorite characters, Inspector Javert.

Beyond that, my list is probably standard:

My Fair Lady (I was Higgins my senior year of HS)
West Side Story (Viva Bernstein!)
Fiddler on the Roof
Sweeney Todd
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Chicago
The King and I (my only concession to R&H)
Camelot
A Funny Thing Happened... (esp. the movie version, oddly enough, which is heavily bowderized of songs)
Little Shop of Horrors
Phantom of the Opera (begrudgingly, as I generally loathe ALW)
I believe in the Holy Trinity: Bach the Father, Beethoven the Son and Brahms the Holy Ghost.

In no particular order:

All that Jazz (from a choreography POV, I loved the Airotica sequence)

Sound of Music (songs were simple but effective)

Carousel (if only because of that song of songs, YNWA)

Ugh, I hate Carousel. We did it my junior year of high school, and despite the fact that I was one of the best singers in the school, I got cast as the Star Keeper (a non-singing role) because all the seniors get the big parts. Besides that, it's a bunch of sappy drivel! :P

Shin Kaguya Shima Densetsu is completely awesome as well, as I discovered recently. There is the factor that it is a Sailor Moon musical, but that doesn't stop it from having some really great music .
"The rest of the poem plays upon that pun. On the contrary, says Catullus, although my verses are soft (molliculi ac parum pudici in line 8, reversing the play on words), they can arouse even limp old men. Should Furius and Aurelius have any remaining doubts about Catullus' virility, he offers to fuck them anally and orally to prove otherwise." - Catullus 16, Wikipedia
