Battle Field 2 patch 1.2
Has anyone tried the new Battle Field 2 patch? I just found out about it (been busy) and can't seem to find a link for it.
I've read on other forums that the PKM seems to have gotten a major upgrade and now everyone seems to be using it. AA has also been improved and has actually taken down jets, so I've read.

It's on EA's BF2 website. I'm downloading it now.
And yes, among the many changes are "support kit primary weapons have been adjusted for accuracy," whatever the hell that means, as well as AT and sniper.

I've played one round with the patch, and I'm getting ready to fire up another. The MG-36 is now officially "da shit!". It feels like it has the same accuracy at he G36C or the G36E (well, maybe not quite that accurate). And with its 100 round clips, it just tears through people. Its too damn bad I already get my expert support badges, or I'd use it more. The M-95 is better, and now I mostly get a kill when I aim at the head. The L-85 still sucks. And P-90 feels a lot like SCAR-L, and its a big step up from the MP-5. The P-90 also has a dot scope, which is nice. And the G3 is much more accurate as well, I'd say about as accurate as the SCAR-L, but with the hitting power of the PKM! Now, these impressions are only with me playing for 20 minutes, so take my comments lightly for the moment.
Now I want to go find a Kankand server and watch the n00b-tubers bitch and moan. And I can't wait to play Wake or Gulf of Oman and watch the planes fall out of the sky!

Hm. So the P90 is the new AT unlock? If it's like the SCAR-L, I'm happy, since the SCAR is almost identical to the M4, which I am soulbound to (or somesuch, I dominate people with it). What's the sniper? I'm 400 points from 1st Sar'nt, so I've got an unlock coming up.
And the MG36 was the shit before the patch anyways.
Not sure how I feel about the reduced air hitpoints yet... AA was always my bane when in a jet, as other pilots could rarely touch me themselves.

Played a few rounds, and I have to say, great improvement. No more bunny hopping, dolphin diving, and invulnerable aircraft. Stock MGs feel more accurate, the sniper rifles are actually decent now. I don't know if I'll be able to out-snipe snipers with medic guns anymore.
Say what you will about the L85, but it's a very nice quasi-sniper rifle, very accurate when you're scoped.

As for sniper rifles, until about a week ago it was my least-played class by far. Then for whatever reason I decided to go at a round of Karkand with the M24, and Holy Throne on Terra, I was just blasting through people. Mind you, I wasn't actually sniping per se, but rather acted as squad marksman and used the M24 as a battle rifle. I didn't have a problem with accuracy at all, the only limit on my performance was the notable handicap of bolt-action versus automatics. I've played a few rounds as MEC sniper too, and even the Dragunov was adequate for squad marksman work. All told, it felt a lot like playing Day of Defeat 1.3b or Call of Duty again, with the Mauser 98k.
So... color me a little pessimistic about these accuracy changes. I'll have the patch finished downloading soon, so I guess I'll just have to see.

I'm 6000+ points from Mst. Sgt., and then I can unlock the MP-7 (which has never impressed me, but I haven't tried it on SF with the patch) and the LA-96 (or whatever its called) sniper rifle.Brother-Captain Gaius wrote:Hm. Yes, yes it was, but now its new and improved. Its the super shit! I swear its my favorite weapon in the game. And the MG36 was the shit before the patch anyways.
Well, in the rounds I played, the jets no longer whored the ground forces. And the attack copters were have having a hard time as well. Not sure how I feel about the reduced air hitpoints yet... AA was always my bane when in a jet, as other pilots could rarely touch me themselves.
And no more point-blank grenade launchers! As for the L85, I can't hit the broadside of a barn with it.Hotfoot wrote:Played a few rounds, and I have to say, great improvement. I have made an art of ghetto sniping with the medic rifles. Single shot + sights/scope = very accurate. Takes a few shots to bring someone down, but if you know what you're doing, you can squeeze the rounds off very quickly.

Indeed. I've only gotten unlocks for medic, support, and sniper classes, but the L-85 is by far my favorite weapon.Hotfoot wrote:I have made an art of ghetto sniping with the medic rifles. I only got the L85 for the G36E, which absolutely blows the former away, IMO. It's like an M16A2 on crack.
And I'm sad to hear of the MP7 changes too. That thing was a beast pre-patch, but then I'm rather biased against shotguns (nice though the Jackhammer may be) so eh. It almost had the accuracy and power of the carbines, to the point where switching to pistol was no longer necessary at range, unlike anti-tank.

Oh, don't get me wrong, the G36E is a sweet gun, but it does lack the very nice scope of the L85. Just about as accurate though.
Sometimes though, it's just fun to grab the good old bog standard engineer shotgun for USMC, and just go around one-shotting people around corners.

The pump action shotguns are fucking awesome. On Karkand I actualy had people complaining that I was shotgun whoring. Never saw that complaint before. I guess they don't like someone who can kick their ass with it. I would often get behind a group of 5 enemies and procede to annihilate them with that shotgun. Or I would turn around a corner and see 4 enemies. One blast to kill the first guy, kill another, then go down. It got to the point where people would run away from anyone with a shotgun. Two seperate people actively accused me of cheating. One demanded to know how I killed him with a long range shot. I commented that when you fire more then 30 long range shots in a game, one or two are bound to connect.
I just wish I could pack the pump shotgun for MEC.

Got some more game time in, and man, people are bitching. Had one guy join my squad and go "OMG, I can't fire when I jump, can anyone fire while jumping?"
The rest of the conversation is as follows:
"Nope. They fixed it in the patch."
"Oh my god that sucks."
"Actually I think it's good."
"What? Why?"
"Because bunny hopping is lame as hell, and think about it, when was the last time you saw a soldier fire a gun IN MID AIR?!"

Gave it a whirl on my shit connection.
- MP5 can hit things now, yay! I can afford to play AT more now ("The commander who has the greater number of Anti-Tank players shall win the day," - Bizarro Sun Tzu).
- Seems a single Stinger does about 75% damage to a gunship. AT missile does about 50%. That's fine with me, but my concern are .50 MGs. They chewed up choppers pre-patch, and while with transports that was fine, I'm a little leery about them doing that much to an armored gunship. Missiles and AA vehicles give them enough trouble as is.
- It will require further testing, but I was shot by some fuckwad point-blank with the fucking F2000 grenade launcher... an issue I had thought resolved.

My thoughts.
Sniper rifles are now very useful. The P90 is a decent little SMG. Accurate on single shot, good up close. Limited magazines though, just 3. The MGs are bloody awesom now. Grenade launchers are now a little more difficult to use.
For some reason they took out the ability to pick up c4, mines, and claymores.

I thought that was silly anyway. Engineers can remove AT mines with the wrench and the other two are rarely a problem.Alyeska wrote:For some reason they took out the ability to pick up c4, mines, and claymores.

You know, I don't think I've ever been killed by the MP7. I remember one fight, just after SF, I was playing on Karkand and this engineer with an MP7 unloads a whole clip at me, and only one shot hit. Then I introduced him to Mr. MG36!Brother-Captain Gaius wrote:And I'm sad to hear of the MP7 changes too. And shotguns, especially the pump actions ones, are the guns I fear the most when I'm ground pounding.

Well, I finally got the patch to fully download and install but now another damn road block. I can play the game fine, but about 15 minutes into the game, everything just freezes up completely. It doesn't crash, it doesn't restart, the screen just freezes up and then I have to do a manuel restart. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
Edit: This never happened before.

Well, first I'd try rebuilding the shaders. Just change your video settings, start an SP game, and then change them back. It could be invalid instructions are being sent to the video driver.Fire Fly wrote:Well, I finally got the patch to fully download and install but now another damn road block. If that falls, I'd try reinstalling and applying the full 1.2 patch.
Did you do the incremental or full patch, btw?

Oh god the Sniper Rifles are fucking awesome! I can actualy play as a sniper and piss the enemy off.
Was just playing on Sharqi Pennesula and seriously pissed off the MEC side by constantly killing their helo pilots. I camped the beach house and found a wonderful spot to kill anyone getting in the chopper. After a while the chopper crew began hunting me and I continued to pick them off one by one with my M95. I got like 10 kills before I was found.

I, to my amused irritation, have found that the sniper rifle change hurt me. I finally figured out the trick to the M24 and SVD Dragunov just a couple weeks ago and was getting very good with them, and now I can't hit shit! I have an unlock now though, and I'm thinking of getting the L96. According to the bf2s.com wiki, it's identical in every meaningful way to the M24, which in other words provides me with a more agreeable rifle on MEC and China.
