Need recommendations for a DVD drive

Post by Losonti Tokash »

Well, this is pretty simple. I'm going to buy the C&C Collection that just came out, but it's on a DVD-rom. Obviously, I don't have one. A friend of mine recommended Sony drives, so that's the general direction I'm leaning in right now.

Getting to the point: what DVD drives do you have, how good are they, and how much did it cost you if it didn't come standard with your computer?

Go to newegg or TigerDirect. You should be able to get a reasonable quality dual layer DVD RW for less than $70.00 for most of their models. No reason to buy a bare bones regular dvd reader.

Sony consumer stuff sucks.

Get a NEC ND-3550. It rocks.

Unless you have some specific needs (like if you, say, plan on burning pirated games with relativly modern protections on DVDs) it really is a commoditised market. Just get whatever is the cheapest and doesn't clash with your case color (ie classic beige in a black case).

If you want specific recommendations, I've got a NEC ND-3520 and it has been serving me without issues even after I've had to crack it open and thinker abit to get some crap out of it that had accidently fallen in.

P.S. How do you not have a dvd reader at least at a relativly modern computer?

NEC is all you need to know.
The 'Sony' drives are actually made by LiteOn, so if you have your heart set on a Sony, buy a LiteOn and save some bucks.

I'm not the one that bought it. Ergo, it is lacking in some/most areas.

Anyway, thanks for the help. Especially the bit about staying the hell away from Sony. :P
