How do hentai artists do it?

Doujinshi is not a term reserved just for fan-made mangas of characters from existing video games, anime, etc. It merely means that the publication was funded by the artist themself. Shinova gave the example of the Tsukihime doujin, and another example would be Yoshitoshi ABe's Charoal Wings at the Old House, which was turned into the anime Haibane-Renmei.

Yaoi is NOT the same as slash. Slash is homosexual relationships between preconcieved characters. Some people even consider femalexfemale characters to be slashing. It's not "chances are" --slash is -only- characters that previously existed. As for what yaoi is, it is malexmale relationships. Yaoi as opposed to shounen-ai means that there is sex, but it doesn't tell you how hardcore. "Jadou", for instance, is considered yaoi but doesn't actually show dick, whereas Romantic Egoist is nothing but porn, porn, porn.

I defer to your expertise on the matter, but I've seen "slash" be described at any male gay porn, be it fanfic, doujinshi, or published. Of course, it's not a subject matter I have terrible interest in.

Doujinshi is actually manga without a publisher's backing. There are plenty of original doujinshi out there made by professional artists. I have made it a point to collect Higuri Yuu's original doujinshi, though they're expensive and hard to find. Most doujinshi (especially that which is sold to people in the US) is fan-work. Much of it is not pornographic by nature, in fact, for a lot of series the bulk of the doujinshi fandom is composed of gag books.

Again, I defer to your experience, but again, I've also heard "doujinshi" described as "fan manga" by a native Japanese speaker. She said it means "amateur comics" in Japanese. I'm sure you are correct though.

Actually, I just remembered something from a few years ago that's a little odd. I was getting lots of lifts home from college from a friend of mine, and to pay for it, he commissioned some hent-rye for his girlfriend. When I was drawing that, I felt more secure in myself and drew a damn fine picture (in fact, after he split up with her, I wanted it back it was that good, never got it, though). Far better than the borderline crap i churned out the other day.

I did want to make it clear you were totally wrong (which you were) for the sake of the people who are trying to learn off this kind of relayed information. I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings by using emphatic language. Come on, that shouldn't cause you to have an emotional breakdown, man.

I would like to echo Picks statments on this in terms of clearing things up. I personally get miffed whenever someone refers to "Yaoi" as simply "Japense gay porn"

Yeah... But what if you get caught?

In my case, in all my sketchbooks, I 1) stagger hentai pics with non-hentai pics, and 2) keep a few looseleaf sheets of paper with non-offensive stuff in there.

That way, if I'm somewhere where I would get in trouble if caught, I pick a location where no one can look over my shoulder, keep the looseleaf paper next to the picture, and thus, should anyone come and ask, it's simple and subtle to move the looseleaf over the picture and pretend to be working on that instead.

If someone asks to see the whole book, I say (in much gentler words) that, basically, it's my fucking book, I have half-completed stuff in there, and I'd rather not show off stuff I haven't finished yet.

So far it's worked like a charm, through several jobs, and more than one trip to several different churches.
