Music hosting?

Post by Dooey Jo »

Is there a site like ImageShack, but for music? All the ones I could find seemed to be either "free" or strange, as in that they were only for particular types of music.

Seeing as how this forum is now also for music, maybe we should have a thread like the one for pic hosting?

Wouldn't hosting most rips of mp3s online be somewhat legally sketchy?

Don't know. Is hosting lots of copyrighted pictures legally sketchy?
I assume such a site would have some sort of system akin to ImageShack's anti-porn thing...

Well, what if the purposes are for independently created music or remixes and whatnot?

I've tried to find a website like the one Dooey's looking for but without luck. Haven't tried again in a while and if no one else expresses interest in the idea of the OP then I'm not about to retry either. :|

http://members.lycos.co.uk/ gives you 50mb free web hosting. I originally set up a page there for hosting some AMVs I made, although I know have a bunch of other stuff on there as well. They don't want you to just use it for hosting, but they don't seem to care if you have some really big files as long as you have other stuff too (even if it isn't much). You do have to get a certain minimum number of hits a month or they will close you down (it is not that many, I get more than enough and my site doesn't have that much on it). So far it seems to be the only reputable and reliable way to store large files for long periods of time. Note this it he UK version, the US version does not have anywhere near as good of a deal. The catch is that they don't allow hotlinking, but few places besides imageshack do nowadays.

Wow
50 MB, PHP, MySQL, unlimited bandwidth... And they don't write "free" all over the place.

That seriously sounds way too good to be true. What's the catch? Pop-ups? Banners? There is a catch, right, besides the hits per month thing?

A seriously fugly (and huge) banner/search bar combo at the top of the page.

I've simply got an ad at the side of my page. It is annoying, but not overly obtrusive (especially compared to other free web hosting services).

Don't forget it also supports FTP (either third party or their own FTP system) and commercial HTML editors like frontpage.

All in all I am very happy with it. You can see what my page looks like here. They seem a bit upset about people downloading two huge videos from my site (they apparently count the bandwidth vs hits), but it has never been enough to actually cause my any problems.

The fact it's total, utter shite. Slow beyond belief, very sketchy uptime etc.
The 'unlimited bandwidth' thing will also never happen - it just looks good in the adverts.

I've never had any downtime trouble, speed issues, and I've never once run out of bandwidth. But if you have a better alternative I would love to hear it, I would move hosts instantly if a better deal presented itself.
