IIRC, it's another Weber universe, which I believe starts with the book Mutineers' Moon. I may be wrong, though.

Correct, the novels are Mutineers Moon, Armageddon Inheritance, and Heirs of Empire.
Capabilities include .8C reactionless drives that can almost instantly change direction of movement, Gravity well warheads that can rip apart a planet, energy eapons that split atomic bonds, inducing fission in their targets, and missiles fired through hyperspace with multiple light minute ranges, mounted on warships a few thousand kilometers in diameter.
Drawbacks include: Relatively low ftl speed( about 3000 C), low hull strength(an explosion not in the teraton range ripped a 20 km chasm in the hull), and the fact that they use bubble shields that are projected a large distance out from the hull of the craft

IIRC, Fifth Imperium vessels use the old bubble shields as well as conformal shields acquired from the Achuultani.

No, they have a dual shield system, with one of the shields much closer in to the hull. The outer shield would still take hits and use energy at an annoying rate, and are really only useful against their own weapons tech.

I do feel I should point out that we don't know how much of that 20 kilometers was empty space.

I'm glad we agree on the number and placement of the shields.

Could have sworn the second shield was just a closer in bubble, not a series of overlapping plates like the Aku'ultan used.

Both Sokar and "Tauri" are from stargate. The Tauri are the "people of earth" in goa'uld.

Sokar is just my personal favorite Goa'uld from Stargate SG-1. All the other Goa'uld liked to pretend to be Gods , Sokar decided that he would rather be the Devil  He was just a badass, although they killed him off mightly cheap........

I take it you've never seen "Stargate"or "Stargate SG-1" on Sci-Fi. The Gou'auld are the main bad guys of the series and movie. They are a highly intellegent snake like parasite that occupies a host body and sub-sumes the host's personality in favor of its own. They have a collective 'race memory and can live for thousands of years, jumping from host to host. Early in their history, the Goa'uld encountered early humans , around the late stone age in our history and found that we made excellent host bodies i comparison to their current hosts , the reptillian "Unas". Switching to their new hosts they set themselves up as the physical manifestation of the local deities , at first these was the early Egyptian pantheon with Ra , Set, Osiris, Hathor, Toth et al...Over time the humans of Earth , known in Goa'uld as the Tauri or "First Peoples", rebelled and drove the Gou'auld off of Earth and sealed the Stargate cutting earth off from the nascent network of Goa'uld empires that they had exported human slaves and followers to settle. The Goa'ulds only real problem is that they have been playing God's for so long that many of them now believe their own lie. Its a cool series , well worth watching on Sci-Fi or picking up the Seasons on DVD.
