Well, we've had a lot of idiot trekkies coming in in the last few days, and that followed right on the heels of the counterattack from CW, so we tend to have a short fuse when dealing with stupid newbies. Of course, newbies that have brains and actually read the site and who therefore don't bring up stupid arguments about how ST could get technology from the empire or somesuch won't get flamed, but nowdays instead of "three strikes, you're out" you only get one. Essentially, this board is under undeclared martial law. I don't think it's entirely fair either, but I can see why they might be a bit quick-tempered, esp. since (as I said earlier) most of the n00bs we've had recently have been idiots.

With any luck this will just be a temporary phase.
