It doesn't do anything but take up space; bloat.

Edit: Is that the full log?
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

Dartzap: Try this. MyWay's supposedly gone legitimate, but I still don't trust it. The "Spyware Cleaner" you installed is a piece of spyware itself. Otherwise, not too much on this.

Can someone explain to me how I actually remove these entries from my registry or whatever? I've been killing the files with KillBox, but they still pop up on HijackThis because of the registry. Sndcfg16.exe is the one I'm looking for; how do I know where to find whatever entry I'm seeking?

My problem is that the speed of my internet has slowed to refried shit and I can't open anything much more than the Google main page (I'm on a school computer). I don't know if it's my computer or the cable provider, but just to be safe, here is my "HijackThis" log. I did a virus scan and spyware beforehand, and the only thing I know is on their is a bit of adware that Microsoft put on that Windows automatically excludes and won't let me delete.

I've been killing the files with KillBox, but they still pop up on HijackThis because of the registry. Sndcfg16.exe is the one I'm looking for; how do I know where to find whatever entry I'm seeking?
The specific Registry entries that it uses are under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run , and HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run . Get to those locations via Regedit (Start, Run, regedit), locate the entry (Sndcfg16.exe), and delete it (make sure to not touch the other entries under those locations, and make a Registry backup if you're unsure). You need to remove the entries from Safe Mode, if at all possible. Most spyware and trojans set themselves up to restore themselves if you try to remove a component while it's running. HijackThis can deal with the entries as well, but has the same limitation.

No spyware, but you're loaded down with a metric fuckton of preloaded services. Look through the list and see if there's anything that you can live without (such as the horde of Vaio multimedia management software). If just your Internet connection is slow, sounds more like an upstream problem.

Problem with spyware. I couldn't even get firefox to load up. Also I can't seem to press CTRL-ALT-DEL to view work processes.

mr friendly guy: No spyware, but you're infected with W32.Alcra.F, which is what's blocking your access to Firefox and Task Manager (as well as turning your system into a spambot). This is going to be complicated if an automated removal doesn't work, so please be patient.

To remove:
  • Reboot to Safe Mode.
  • Try an antivirus scan with an up-to-date antivirus program (as in, updated within the past month) from there. If it works, great; you can stop here. If that doesn't work, then proceed to the next steps (while still in Safe Mode).
  • Kill "O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [outlook] C:\Program Files\outlook\outlook.exe /auto" with HJT.
  • Delete C:\Program Files\outlook\outlook.exe and any .zip and .tmp files in that directory as well.
  • Reboot into normal Windows and switch on "View all files." Look through your Windows and Windows\System directories for hidden versions of:
    • %System%\cmd.com
    • %System%\netstat.com
    • %System%\ping.com
    • %System%\regedit.com
    • %System%\taskkill.com
    • %System%\tasklist.com
    • %System%\tracert.com
If a hidden version (the file icon is partially transparent and with 0 byte size) is there, delete it. This should restore access to the original programs.
  • Check your P2P shared files folders for strange filenames, and delete if found.
  • Check in your Windows user profile folder (C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>) for a hidden directory named "Complete"; if there and you didn't create it yourself, delete it.
  • Update every P2P program you might be using to the latest version. Alcan/Alcra spreads via exploiting holes in P2P software.
  • Perform a repair installation if Task Manager still won't open. If this is the case, Alcra has overwritten Task Manager (and potentially a few other things) with either a blank file or an infected program, so it has to be restored from disc. Do not use a Restore Point, as that will simply reload the worm as well.

Uninstall it at your choice. Viewpoint, however, came with AOL and isn't good.

Yes, I have an iPod and use it quite frequently, so iTunes is going to be staying. Thanks, though.

As for as Kodak goes, I do not have a camera, but I did have to get some of my friend's pictures off his camera for him a while back, and I've been meaning to uninstall the Kodak Software ever since, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

So, Joe, any news? I take it nothing bad or unusual based on the no-news=good-news principle.

Listen, I realize I haven't been on for a while, but my computer has been crawling lately... I can't open My Computer to look at my drive partitions or cd/dvd drives, and if i hit browse in anything, and it shows my computer, it stops. And just now, when I downloaded Hijack This again, and I had to restart due to the start menu disappearing (actually my fault, because the shortcuts to my download partition wasn't working, and I was closing explorer.exe in task manager, since there were 3-4 of them, and I thought I could start the explorer.exe that controls the start menu through the run command like i have before...) anyways.

Here's my Log:

Sounds like you have a particularly rotten Windows install. No malware and only a few crufty things...

Hm...interesting. My sister has the iPod, but the thing is, I swear there were two csrss.exe running...and if I check right now, there are two running...I did run Hijack right after a reboot, maybe it was too soon...I'll post another log up, maybe it'll catch it this time.

Well, shoot, it's not listed as a running process, but it's there twice in my Task Manager...and so is winlogon.exe. Maybe a bigger problem than I thought? and funny thing, I have 6 svchost.exe running, three under user SYSTEM, two under NETWORK SERVICE, and one LOCAL SERVICE. Now I feel nervous... :?

EDIT: I don't know about rotten install, thing is that last December I got myself a virus, and my mom's work friend's son just did a course at a tech college, so he wiped everything up and installed xp again. Everything worked better than original then, and only in the last couple months did this problem show up. I'm pretty sure it was my sister this time, but I can't be 100% sure.

Phantasee: One change, but I otherwise agree with Einhander's analysis. Get rid of this:

Code: Select all

As for the multiple instances of svchost.exe and the instance of winlogon.exe, those are perfectly normal. The multiple instances of csrss.exe are a bit unusual but within the realm of possibility for normal use.
