And the other 27 pilots shot down at Yavin (Luke, Wedge and a Y-Wing survived out of 30 fighters)

Maybe we should remember that the TIE fighter is a older model than the X-wing.The Old Republic has been at peace for so long they probably don't have a good grasp of military engineering anymore. So,military tech isn't in stasis, unlike the rest of the SW technology.
Now,the TIE fighter, against the models it was pitted against during its development time, served excellently. You had the Z-95 headhunter, the Y-wing,the T-wing and whatever not.The TIE fighter ruled them all.Even against the X-wing,a fighter that was designed to serve as competition against the TIE fighter{i.e,a superior if not comparable model},the TIE fighter was good enough to take them on a one on one basis.Remember how Black 4 took out an X-wing?The reason why the Rebs took out TIEs so easily at Yavin can be easily explained. They outnumbered the pitiful numbers sent against them. The TIE just couldn't stay on their targets and kill them,if they did that, another X-wing would come along and vape them, like what Luke did for Biggs.

Was he shot down?
No. He surrendered to US forces in 45, was turned over to the soviets, spent 10 years in prison, was turned over to W. Germany in 55, served in the west german air force till the 70s and died in 95.

Re: Tie Fighters- Unfairly maligned?
Well the TIE was meant to be based on a Ship and act in Squadrons to assist that ship in it's mission, so if an ISD had to blockade a planet, it's TIE's would then be deployed to cover area's th ISD could not see, they could then handle a threat themselves or delay it long enough for the big ship to do the job. They were a supplement to the firepower of whatever was carrying them.JJP wrote:Is it me, or have TIE fighters been unfairly maligned by the NR biased official literature? Sure they're unshielded, but they seem to have numerous advantages over fighters like the X-Wing.
Doing without shields enabled them to add more fuel or Ammo and the trade off was thought acceptable as they were designed to fight in Squadron formations or at the very least groups of three. You'll note that when a TIE got behind any other fighter, unless someelse interfered, that fighter died.

There are two in ROTJ seen to be killed by Mon Cal ships, and one seen to be disabled by an A-wing crashing through its bridge and Hitting the DS2 before it could correct itself, after having the entire Rebel Capship fleet beoing ordered to shoot at it.David wrote:Those turbolasers aren't any good at killing starfighters, as we see in the movies and EU. Almost every SD I've seen or read destroyed was killed by fighters. Thus the lancer class cruiser with it's 20 quad laser cannons.
Blame the Eu for the easy death of ISD's theories that promulgate the NG's and Web Boards. Mind you if your going to write novels based on a Computer game that is balanced to allow a single fighter to kill a Cap ship, what do you expect?
Common sense
I think the whole senario is stupid.
Pilot 1:"Hey, there a SD everyone!"
Pilot 2: "Don't worry! We can just fire a load of torpedos at it. Never mind the fact that the ship can move and there are tie fighters all around and the guns will lock on us while e are setting up our shot and their sheilds are meant to absourd multi-gigaton blasts! It'll work."

Those turbolasers can't kill fighters? Funny, the Falcon was taking a profound beating in the Asteroid Belt by one, and of course, the fatal A-wing that nailed the Executor was hit, from the side, by a TL...

Hi all....All right we all saw it in ANH.... about 9 fighters including Vader swooped in against 30 rebel fighters along with maybe some of the DS' defenses .....manage to kill 27 of them. Now aren't those numbers weird? Or it shows the true might of TIE's...then again those fighters were part of Black Squadron which was Vader's personal ELITE unit.
I believe though that it all depends on skill...Veteran pilots would still fly old TIE/LN rather than the new Interceptor or even better the Defender during the battle of Endor. EX: The Emperor's Sword and Shield units both TIE/LN model squadrons.
Cyaround,
Jason

Makes you wonder what would have happened if Tarkin had launched MOST of the fighters the Death Star carried
