I'm guessing it probably isn't, if for no other reason than the perspective of the camera would be highly unusual/awkward for a real camera position.

Yeah, I've been out in small boats and seen weather like that coming. We always made for shore AFAFP (as fast as fucking possible). A ship that size could handle it, but the crew would be eating cold meals straight from a tin.

It's apparently real, it's a picture of 'shelf clouds', as discussed on snopes.

I do believe now, since I got someone to explain the likely position the camera would have been at. I thought the boat looked a bit too skew for that, but I see now that it actually would be almost perfectly positioned to someone at exactly the edge of the boat
