But what if she truly believed that she didn't know who the father was? In that case, we'd just have to assume that Shmi's got mental problems.
She didn't say that she didn't know who the father was. She said that there was no father.

In any case, Shmi seems very sane in all of the literature, and the parts of the movie that are relevent.

What, you never had a nutty girlfriend who was 100% convinced that you were cheating on her, even if you weren't? :D

Just 'cuz someone doesn't foam at the mouth or wear half a cantaloupe on their head while pissing in their pants, that doesn't mean they don't have mental instabilities.

That's true, SPOOFE, but it would be strange that in the literature NO ONE even hints that they think she is mentally ill.

He was Not Crucified ,But tried to BE crucified (with 2 other people) By Count Dooku

It fits in to the Christ figure perfectly (not that i'm a christian)

he is like a Jesus (or Jebus As Homer Simpson Says)
The best theory Yet :P

Thank you. To read more about this, and similar theories, read "The Symbolism of Star Wars," which can be found in the AotC discussion on Stardestroyer.net

There's a much weirder explanation, which might be unfeasible but nonetheless funny!! A crack team of scientists led by Sith henchmen abducted Shmi, inseminated her artificially and used their psychic powers to erase any memory!!!

Seriously, though, it's possible that Shmi once was married - but when her spouse died, she didn't have money to take care of herself and was forced into slavery.

That does not make sense, according to EU material. The symbollic interpretation of Anakin as the messiah is much more sound.

Here's an explanation:

The Force needed an agent to restore the Balance.

There, explained it easily.

This implies that the Force actually attempts to balance itself. This is unusual for natural phenomena, but fully in keeping with what we know of the Force.

BTW, this does not exclude the symbolic interpretation of Anakin as the messiah, in fact, it adds credence to it.

Yes, I know it adds credence to that theory. Cause it's the one that fits, you see.

The Force is not just an energy field. It's got some sort of Plan, from the look of things. Then again, some people think it has to follow science's rules...

I don't think that the Force is intelligent in any way, and whether someone is of the dark or light side is entirely their choice. But there will always be those willing to take the quick and easy route.

The act of conceiving a child in an effort to balance the Force is an act requiring intelligence. The Force is probably intelligent. It should also be noted that the Force may have either concocted the Prophecy in the first place, or is working in order to see that the Prophecy comes to pass.

It is the source of the prophecy, I'll bet. 'Sup people, this'll be happening in ten thousand years, don't say I didn't warn you'.

'A vergence? Centered around a person?'

Fuckers forgot. And Vader killed them.

I don't think that they forgot the prophecy. I have heard from a few sources that part of the Prophecy of the Chosen One is that darkness would envelope the Galaxy before Balance was restored. I think that there was nothing that the Jedi could do to prevent this. I hope that, in the end, the Jedi tale is one of tragedy. That it is apparent that they were forced into their actions. That is my goal for Episode III, but in any case, I think it is clear that the Jedi have violated their mandates from their actions in Episode II. The Prophecy is correct, and don't forget that, in the end, Vader is the Chosen One.
