School Moves to Block Video Game Release

Post by Dominus Atheos »

The stupidity, IT BURNSSSSSSSSS
The Miami-Dade school district in Florida is attempting to become the first major school district to fight against the release of Rockstar's upcoming game, Bully (pictured).
ImageAccording to the Miami Herald, School Board member Frank Bolaños proposed a resolution to pressure Rockstar into withholding the release of the action game, which is set in a reform school, asking local merchants not to carry the game and urging parents not to buy the game.

''This game is built entirely around bullies and is staged in a school -- it's the antithesis of everything we're trying to promote,'' he said.

Last Thursday, a board committee unanimously approved the resolution. A full board vote is expected this Wednesday.

Rockstar issued a written statement to the Herald, which said, ''We all have different opinions about art and entertainment, but everyone agrees that real-life school violence is a serious issue which lacks easy answers."

According to the Miami Herald, Miami-Dade School Board members believe that if Bully is released, it will trigger unwanted "repercussions", presumably including fights or worse.

Who exactly gave the school district the authority to do this?
The most basic assumption about the world is that it does not contradict itself.

Jack Thompson, Hillary Clinton, and Joseph Lieberman are to blame for this.

But their names are not monosyllabic. So to the tried and true.

School Bully Ban Falters

The Miami-Dade School Board has passed a resolution asking local retailers not to sell Take-Two's game Bully to minors. It's a weakened down version of the original proposal which called for retailers not to stock the game.

The proposal was watered down following first amendment arguments from opponents, including local students. But officials are clearly unhappy with the game's content. Board member Frank Bolanos, who officially sponsored the resolution, described the game as "violence of the worst kind."

The resolution now goes no further than the industry's own ESRB ratings, which urge retailers not to sell adult-rated games to children. However, what's significant is the game's latest appearance on the media's radar. It's clear that Bully is going to pull a lot of coverage this year.

I once heard a suggestion for a HL mod that allowed to player to be an English football hooligan. I don't know if anything came of it, or what the reaction would have been had it been made and released, but it sounded like fun :P

On topic, is it my imagination or are games nowadays really trying to test the limits?

Yes, because the juggernaut that is Take Two is giving a shit  .

And that last statement is pure fucking insanity.
According to the Miami Herald, Miami-Dade School Board members believe that if Bully is released, it will trigger unwanted "repercussions", presumably including fights or worse.
If that was so, I'm amazed that when GTA3, VC, and SA were released unwanted repercussions didn't happen in NY, LA, and Miami...and literally every other major city.
