Only one screenshot and one unit so far, but expect regular updates. The unit they have is the Zweihander, of the Holy Roman Empire- a fully armored infantryman in plate with a massive two-handed sword. (This unit was not in the original Medieval).

Well, there goes any hope of free time I might have had for the year following this game's release.
Also, I may have befouled my underwear. Jesus, that looks sweet.

A thought just occured: I wonder if the Aztecs will be playable? If not, I hope for a mod.

More awesome pictures of Knights. Still no Kataphraktoi
Cool- they've added the Feudal Knight to the 3D Unit Viewer. Looks sexy.

Why? So You can be curbstomped by a handful of Castillians?Alferd Packer wrote:A thought just occured: I wonder if the Aztecs will be playable? If not, I hope for a mod.
"The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles."
I hope so- I mean, if they can include Carriage Ballistae based off a single historical reference in Barbarian Invasion, they should be able to introduce those Greek units.
I'm still hoping they'll engage in some healthy speculation for what Constantinople's armies will look like in a situation where the city wasn't sacked and Asia Minor wasn't lost.

Most wholeheartedly seconded. Personally, I'd be more than pleased if they just offered some different variations on the normal units, as I find it more than a little ridiculous to see Byzantium holding onto its eleventh-century army units well into the 1400's in almost every single game.Vympel wrote:I hope so- I mean, if they can include Carriage Ballistae based off a single historical reference in Barbarian Invasion, they should be able to introduce those Greek units.

At the very least, they *have* to include the Tagmata, who were just as infamous as the Kataphraktoi during the Empire's heyday.
And why not, say, include an ahistorical late-game skutatoi regiment armed with early gunpowder weapons? Kataphraktoi cuirassiers? Tagmata units armed with arquebusiers? ... And so on and so forth.

I could see the Byzantines going for carabiniers as well, to try to counter the horse archers of the Sassanids/Turks.
And I'd love to see the Varangian Guard update into something more along the lines of the elite guards of Western Europe, rather than remaining a rather mediocre (for an elite unit) heavy infantry.

First Greek/ Eastern Empire unit in the 3d viewer!
Trebizond Archers. The classic.
The model is awesome- they've got the typical CA colour for the Empire, (purple, just like in MTW and RTW:BI)- a really detailed quiver and compound bow, a buckler on their back, sword in scabbard slung at their side ... wow. Looks great.
(Though I never used them in hand to hand combat, even though IIRC they were capable of it in the original).
Show us some infantry!
This reminds me of how cool the Bulgarian Brigands were as well.

The best thing about Byzantine infantry (apart from how cool they looked- well, not in the tactical map, nothing in the game could be described as looking cool, sprites and all that) was that as long as they were sufficiently upgraded, even in the late game they could be decisive. And unlike the heavy infantry of Western Europe, they come in large units.
Still, in the game they should speculate on some "modern" units for the later time periods.
